  • ARIPIPRAZOLE 7.5mg/ml

How do I take/use this medicine?

Aripiprazole Intramuscular injection is to be injected slowly into the muscles, usually into the buttock muscles.

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

Aripiprazole Intramuscular injection is given when you are not able to swallow pills or if you need urgent treatment for your condition. Your doctor will advise you about when you can switch from the injection to the pills.

In order for you to get the most benefit from Aripiprazole Intramuscular injection, use it exactly as advised by your doctor.

Aripiprazole Intramuscular injection must not be injected intravenously or subcutaneously.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

- epilepsy (fits) or other brain disorders
- glaucoma (high pressure in the eye)
- previous stroke
- previous heart attack
- heart disease
- bone marrow disease
- blood disorders or a low blood cell count
- Parkinson's disease
- Alzheimer's disease or dementia

If you have diabetes, you may need to monitor your blood sugar levels more often. This is because Aripiprazole may cause a rise in blood sugar levels. Ask your doctor about how often you need to check your blood sugar levels.

Aripiprazole may affect the ability of your body to adjust to temperature changes in the environment. Avoid exposure to very cold or very hot environments. Avoid strenuous exercise and activities like going to the sauna. Drink more water to prevent dehydration.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are being treated with Aripiprazole.

Aripiprazole is not suitable for elderly people with psychosis that is related to dementia.

Aripiprazole may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children, teenagers and young adults. As depression and some psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with an increased risk of suicide, it is important for you or your family members to monitor your condition especially at the start of treatment and if your dosage is still being adjusted. If you experience new or sudden changes in mood, behaviour, thoughts or feelings or a worsening of your depression with suicidal thoughts or attempts, harm to self or harm to others, contact your doctor immediately.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Aripiprazole Intramuscular injection is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness).

It helps to quickly relieve symptoms common in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, such as agitation, distress, distorted thinking and emotional instability.

What side effects could I experience?

Aripiprazole may make you drowsy or dizzy. It may also blur your vision. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. Dizziness may be worse when you get up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking Aripiprazole for the first time or if your dose is still being adjusted. This is normal and should disappear gradually as you get used to the medicine. Lie down until you feel better. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position.

Some common side effects with Aripiprazole include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach discomfort, constipation, anxiety, agitation, restlessness, difficulty sleeping and headache. There may also be some redness, pain and discomfort at the injection site. Inform your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

Inform your doctor if you gain weight while being treated with Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor immediately if you have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting yourself.

- mouth, tongue or throat ulcers
