How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Alfacalcidol exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take Alfacalcidol with food. Take it at the same time every day.
You may need to take Alfacalcidol for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue to take it even when you feel better and do not stop taking it unless advised by your doctor to do so.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease, kidney stones, high levels of phosphate in the blood or heart disease.
Alert your doctor if you pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Alfacalcidol.
Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Alfacalcidol passes into the breast milk. If you are breastfeeding your baby, your doctor may want to monitor the level of Alfacalcidol in your baby.
When you first start taking Alfacalcidol, you will need to have regular blood tests to check the level of calcium and phosphate in your blood. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests. He may also adjust your dose of Alfacalcidol according to the results of these blood tests.
Your doctor may also give you a "phosphate-binding agent" to take together with Alfacalcidol. This helps to maintain the right level of phosphate in your blood. He may also give you some calcium pills to help maintain the right level of calcium in your blood.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have been told that you have high levels of calcium in your body.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Alfacalcidol is a form of vitamin D.
Alfacalcidol is needed to help build strong bones. In order to build strong bones, other nutrients such as calcium and phosphate are important. Alfacalcidol helps you to absorb more calcium and phosphate from the food you eat or the supplements that you take.
Alfacalcidol is used to treat bone disease and strengthen soft, weak bones caused by diseases such as kidney failure, parathyroid gland disease, rickets ("bow legs") and osteomalacia ("soft bones").
It may also be given to newborn babies who do not have enough calcium in their blood.
What side effects could I experience?
The side effects of Alfacalcidol are usually caused by too much calcium or phosphate in the blood. Alert your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms:
- passing urine too often
- dry mouth
- unpleasant or metallic taste in the mouth
- muscle weakness
- pain in the muscle or bones
You may also develop a rash or your skin may feel itchy. Alert your doctor if you have a severe rash or if the rash does not go away. Some Alfacalcidol preparations may contain oils made from seeds, such as sesame seeds. This may cause allergic reactions.
Other side effects are less common but may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms:
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of the tongue or throat or any part of the face
- tightness in the chest
- unusually fast, slow or irregular heartbeat
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, for example:
- heart medicine such as digoxin
- epilepsy (fits or seizures) medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbitone, primidone
- sleeping pills such as barbiturates
- diuretics ("water pills") such as hydrochlorothiazide, chlorothiazide, metolazone
- antifungal medicine such as ketoconazole, itraconazole
Do not take Alfacalcidol at the same time as cholesterol medicine such as cholestyramine or colestipol. The effectiveness of Alfacalcidol will be reduced if cholestyramine or colestipol is taken at the same time. If you need to take cholestyramine or colestipol, take it at least 1 hour before or at least 4 hours after Alfacalcidol.
Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
