  • ALFUZOSIN 2.5mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Alfuzosin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

If you are taking Alfuzosin for the very first time, take it just before you sleep. Thereafter, take it as instructed by your doctor.

Take Alfuzosin immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day. Swallow Alfuzosin whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

Alfuzosin must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking it even when there are signs of improvement. Do not stop taking Alfuzosin unless instructed by the doctor.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have heart or kidney disease, angina (chest pain) or any other illnesses.

If you are going for an operation -- including minor operations, eye or dental surgery -- always inform your doctor, surgeon or dentist that you are taking Alfuzosin. Your doctor may ask you to stop Alfuzosin temporarily before your operation. Consult your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease. If you or your family members have ever had prostate cancer, alert your doctor.

Alert your doctor if you have low blood pressure or if you have ever fainted or felt dizzy when you get up from a sitting or lying down position.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Alfuzosin is used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland in men. This enlargement of the prostate gland is called Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH). The enlarged prostate gland may cause problems when you pass urine.

Alfuzosin relaxes the muscles in the prostate gland and bladder. This helps to improve symptoms such as difficulty in passing urine, slow or interrupted flow of urine, frequent urination and dribbling after passing urine.

What side effects could I experience?

Alfuzosin may cause tiredness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, constipation and upper respiratory tract infection.

You may also feel drowsy or dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking Alfuzosin for the first time. This is normal and should improve gradually as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, sit or lie down until the drowsiness or dizziness goes away. Avoid driving or taking part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Less commonly, Alfuzosin may cause other side effects. Alert your doctor if you experience unusual problems while being treated with Alfuzosin.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take antifungals such as itraconazole and ketoconazole, or antivirals such as ritonavir together with Alfuzosin.

Do not take Alfuzosin if you have taken other similar medicines, such as doxazosin or prazosin.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any medicines, especially those listed here:

- high blood pressure medicines
- heart medicines, such as nitrates
- epilepsy medicines, such as carbamazepine, phenytoin or phenobarbitone
- antibiotics, such as clarithromycin, erythromycin or rifampicin
