How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Rasagiline exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may need to take Rasagiline for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue taking Rasagiline even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Rasagiline suddenly as this could worsen your condition.

You may take Rasagiline with or without food. If you experience nausea, take Rasagiline with food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease or a condition known as "phaeochromocytoma" (a growth on a small gland that sits on top of the kidneys).

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Rasagiline. You must stop taking Rasagiline 14 days before any surgery which requires anaesthesia.

Rasagiline may increase the risk of developing a type of skin cancer called melanoma. Your doctor may refer you to a skin specialist in order to monitor your body's response to Rasagiline.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant while being treated with Rasagiline.

Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.

Do not take Rasagiline within 5 weeks of stopping an antidepressant called fluoxetine. Do not take any other antidepressants within 2 weeks of stopping Rasagiline. Always alert your doctor if you are taking or have ever taken any antidepressants or mood medicines.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol and other drinks that contain tyramine such as red wine and beer.

Avoid foods that are high in tyramine, such as cheese, sausages, soya beans, soya sauce, fava beans, broad beans, certain pickles such as sauerkraut. These can cause life-threatening high blood pressure when taken together with Rasagiline. Ask your doctor about the types of food you should avoid.

Why do I need this medicine?

Rasagiline is used alone or together with other medicines to treat Parkinson's Disease. It is used to improve the medicinal effect of other Parkinson's Disease medicines such as levodopa.

Rasagiline does not cure Parkinson's Disease but it can improve the quality of life for people who have the disease. It is sometimes used to treat other conditions.

What side effects could I experience?

Rasagiline may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Rasagiline may cause your blood pressure to fall suddenly when you get up from a sitting or lying down position. To minimise this problem, stand up slowly.

Rasagiline may also cause nausea, stomach pain, constipation, dry mouth, headache, tiredness, hallucinations or difficulty controlling your movements. These side effects are common especially when you have just started taking Rasagiline. Let your doctor know if these side effects get worse or if they do not go away.

Other side effects are not common but may be serious. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience severe headache (especially if it occurs suddenly or quickly becomes very painful), blurred vision, confusion, seizures, chest pain or unexplained nausea and vomiting.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking or have ever taken any mood medicines or antidepressants.

Do not take Rasagiline within 5 weeks of stopping an antidepressant called fluoxetine. Do not take any other antidepressants within 2 weeks of stopping Rasagiline. You must inform your doctor if you are or ever were on mood medicines or antidepressants.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- mood medicines or sleeping pills
- antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin
- medicines to suppress appetite such as sibutramine
- painkillers such as oxycodone, tramadol
- cough and cold medicines that contain decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
