Ingredients

  • AZITHROMYCIN 500mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Azithromycin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Azithromycin at regular intervals as instructed. Take it at the same time each day. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

If you have been given capsules, take them on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food, with plenty of water.

If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole with plenty of water. You may take the tablets with or without food. Take them after food if you experience any stomach discomfort.

If you have been given an oral suspension, shake it well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose. You may take the suspension with or without food. Take it after food if you experience any stomach discomfort.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you suffer from heart, liver or kidney disease.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are being treated with Azithromycin for gonorrhoea, you should follow your doctor's advice on ways to prevent passing the disease to others. You should also avoid sexual contact until the doctor certifies that you are cleared of the infection.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (breathlessness, rashes, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as clarithromycin, erythromycin or any other macrolide antibiotics.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Azithromycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the gut, ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin or bladder.

It is also used to treat sexually-transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea, and other genital infections.

Azithromycin can also be used to prevent infection when you undergo certain dental procedures.

Azithromycin belongs to a group of antibiotics called the macrolides.

What side effects could I experience?

You may have diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort and headache while being treated with Azithromycin. These side effects are usually mild and will get better with rest. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Once you have mixed the powder with water, the oral suspension can be stored at room temperature not more than 30°C. Throw away any unused portion after 10 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take antacids together with Azithromycin. Antacids could reduce the effectiveness of Azithromycin. If you must take antacids, take them at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after Azithromycin.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- heart medicines such as digoxin, digitoxin and amiodarone
- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)
- lovastatin and other similar cholesterol medicines
- migraine medicines that contain ergotamine
- other medicines such as nelfinavir, triazolam

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
