How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Bendroflumethiazide exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Bendroflumethiazide must be taken regularly for it to work well. Continue taking Bendroflumethiazide even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

You will feel the urge to pass urine more often while being treated with Bendroflumethiazide. Take it early in the day to avoid going to the toilet too often at night. Try to take it at about the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you suffer have:

- diabetes
- gout
- systemic lupus erythematosus (also known as SLE, a disease of the immune system)

Your doctor may monitor your kidney function regularly and carry out blood tests if you are taking Bendroflumethiazide long-term.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have bladder or urination problems.

Alert your doctor if you suffer from low potassium, low sodium or high calcium in the blood.

Bendroflumethiazide may not be suitable for you if you have high levels of uric acid, severe liver or kidney disease or Addison's disease (a disorder of the adrenal glands).

Do not take Bendroflumethiazide if you are breastfeeding as it suppresses the production of breast milk.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant while being treated with Bendroflumethiazide.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Your doctor may give you potassium supplements while you are being treated with Bendroflumethiazide. Alternatively, he may tell you to eat more of foods that are high in potassium, such as orange juice, bananas or prunes.

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Bendroflumethiazide helps to keep your blood pressure under control.

It is also used to treat water retention caused by heart or kidney disease. Water retention may be noticed as swelling of the feet, ankles, lower leg and hands. For this reason, it is commonly known as a "water pill".

Bendroflumethiazide is also used to suppress production of breast milk.

What side effects could I experience?

Bendroflumethiazide may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. You may feel dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking Bendroflumethiazide for the very first time. This is normal and should improve as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position.

Bendroflumethiazide may also cause stomach discomfort and sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- digoxin or other heart medicines
- blood pressure medicines
- mood medicines such as lithium or amitriptyline
- allopurinol (a gout medicine)
- cholestyramine and colestipol (cholesterol medicines)
- anti-infectives such as amphotericin B
- painkillers or muscle relaxants
- carbamazepine (a medicine used to treat epilepsy or fits)
- birth control pills
- calcium supplements

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
