How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Buspirone exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may need to take Buspirone regularly for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue to take Buspirone even when you feel better. Do not stop taking Buspirone unless advised by your doctor to do so, especially if you have been taking it for a long time or if you are on high doses.

You may take Buspirone with or without food.

However, it is best to take it consistently in relation to the timing of meals (either always with food or always without food).

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you are currently taking any other sedatives or mood medicines.

Alert your doctor if you also have depression, a history of depression, or any other mood or psychiatric problems.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Buspirone.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Buspirone if you are taking or have taken other mood medicines known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Some examples of MAOIs include isocarboxazid, phenelzine, moclobemide, selegiline and tranylcypromine. Alert your doctor immediately if you are taking or have taken any of these medicines or other MAOIs.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Buspirone if you are pregnant.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Buspirone.

Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:
- liver or kidney disease
- epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures)

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Avoid drinking too much (more than 1 litre a day) of grapefruit juice.

Why do I need this medicine?

Buspirone is used to treat anxiety.

It helps to relieve the symptoms of anxiety, for example, feeling tense, irritable, "edgy" or restless.

What side effects could I experience?

Buspirone may make you drowsy or dizzy. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Buspirone may also cause headache, nausea, blurred vision, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, light headedness and a feeling of excitement.

Let your doctor know if these side effects are severe or if they do not go away.

Other side effects are not common but may be serious. You may need medical attention. Alert your doctor quickly if you develop any of these symptoms:
- chest pain
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- palpitations

Alert the doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Buspirone.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Buspirone if you are taking or have taken other mood medicines known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Some examples of MAOIs include isocarboxazid, phenelzine, moclobemide, selegiline and tranylcypromine. Alert your doctor immediately if you are taking or have taken any of these medicines or other MAOIs.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole or itraconazole
- antibiotics such as erythromycin or clarithromycin
- antiviral medicines such as ritonavir
- heart or blood pressure medicines such as diltiazem or verapamil
- antidepressants such as trazodone or nefazodone
- rifampicin (a tuberculosis medicine)
- epilepsy (fits) medicines such as carbamazepine or phenytoin

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
