How do I take/use this medicine?

Varenicline must be taken exactly as directed for it to work well. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. You may feel unwell if Varencline is stopped suddenly.

Set a target date to stop smoking. Start Varenicline 1 week before the target date. During this 1 week, you may continue smoking. However, ensure that you stop smoking on the target date. You may see the benefits of Varenicline only after a few weeks of taking it. Do not be discouraged, continue to take Varenicline and keep to your no-smoking goal.

If you sucessfully quit smoking within the first 12 weeks, your doctor may give you Varenicline for another 12 weeks to help you stay off cigarettes. Ensure that you follow through with the treatment plan that your doctor has given you.

Take Varenicline after a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not chew or crush it.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Alert the doctor if you have kidney disease, insomnia or a history of epilepsy (fits or seizures).

Alert your doctor when you are on Varenicline as part of a smoking cessation programme. Your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of your pre-existing medications accordingly.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Varenicline if you are under 18 years of age.

Alert your doctor if you have depression or other mood disorders.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Varenicline helps you to quit smoking.

Varenicline helps to reduce the withdrawal symptoms you may experience while trying to quit smoking. It also prevents you from enjoying the pleasurable effects of smoking by blocking the effect of nicotine in your brain.

Varenicline is meant to be taken as part of a complete smoking cessation programme that should include patient education and counselling.

What side effects could I experience?

Nausea is a common side effect of Varenicline. The doctor will increase your dose gradually to reduce this side effect.

Varenicline may make you drowsy. If you feel drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Varenicline may also cause constipation, stomach wind, stomach ache, dry mouth, problems sleeping and vivid dreams.

Other side effects are less common but may need urgent medical attention. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop mood swings, depression, suicidal thoughts or significant changes in behaviour such as agitation, aggressiveness, hostility, anxiety, confusion, paranoia or hallucinations. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop allergic reactions such as breathlessness, swelling of the face, severe mouth ulcers and serious skin reactions such as rashes that peel or blister.

Some other side effects are not related to Varenicline but may be related to smoking cessation. These include increased appetite, weight gain and poor concentration.

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with this medicine.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking cimetidine (a gastric medicine), warfarin (blood-thinning medicine) or theophylline (asthma medicine) or using insulin.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
