Chloramphenicol 1.0% Eye Ointment Brochlor for the Treatment of Acute Conjunctivitis

What is Brochlor Eye Ointment?
Brochlor (ointment) contains 1.0% w/w of the active ingredient, chloramphenicol.
The ointment also contains liquid paraffin and plastibase 30W(dispersed in mineral oil).If you are allergic to any of these ingredients, you must tell your pharmacist or doctor.
 
Brochlor 1.0%w/w Eye Ointment is a smooth, translucent ointment and is available in a 4g laminated tube.Chloramphenicol, the active ingredient, is an antibiotic used to kill bacteria which cause infections.

What is the Ointment used for?
The Ointment is used to treat acute bacterial conjunctivitis.This is an eye infection caused by bacteria which leads to an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelid). It can be used by adults and children aged 2 years and over.
 
Will the Ointment suit you?
Before you take the ointment, you MUST read the following to make quite sure that the medicine is suitable for you.

You must be sure that your eye problem is the result of a bacterial infection.
Your pharmacist will help you to decide this, but you may have the following symptoms if you have bacterial conjunctivitis:
* a sticky discharge which can make the eye difficult to open in the morning
* the eye may feel ''gritty'' or ''irritated''

You MUST seek immediate medical attention and you must not use the Ointment if:
* your eyesight is affected (loss of sight, blurred vision, haloes around lights)
* your iris or pupil is hazy or cloudy
* your pupil (the black centre of the eye) looks unusual
* your eye has suffered a blow or other injury
* you have a foreign body which has not been removed
* you have pain within the eye itself
* your eyes are sensitive to light
* your eye is inflamed and you have a rash on the salp or face
 
You should consult your doctor and you must not use the Ointment if:
- your symptoms are accompanied by a headache
- you are receiving treatment for glaucoma
- you are (or think you may be) pregnant or are breastfeeding
- you have or have had dry eye syndrome in the past
- you have had eye surgery or laser treatment in the last 6 months
- you are currently using other eye drops or ointments
- you hve had conjunctivitis rcently

You should not use this Ointment if:
* you or a member of your family have had a blood disease
* you have ever had problems with your bone marrow
* you are allergic to chloramphenicol or any of the other ingredients.They are listed under What is in Brochlor Eye Ointment?
* the tamper evident closure on the cap has already been opened when you open the pack for the first time.

All eye ointments can cause temporary blurring of vision after applicatin. Wait until your vision is clear before driving or using machines.

How should you use the Ointment?
If oyu are using the Ointment alone, apply a small amount of ointment to the affected eye three or four times a day. If you are using Ointment at night  and chloramphenicol eye drops during the day, apply the Ointmnet before going to bed.
The course of treatment is 5 days. It is important to complete the coourse of treatment even if your eyes feel better.
 
If your symptoms not improve after 2 days, see a doctor. Seek immediate madical advice at any time if your symptoms get worse.
Do not use the Ointment for more than 5 days without consulting your doctor.
