How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Ciprofloxacin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take Ciprofloxacin at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.
Ciprofloxacin may be taken with or without food. You may take it after meals if it gives you stomach discomfort. Always take it with a full glass of water, unless your doctor has specifically told you not to do so.
If you have been given an oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have heart or kidney disease, diabetes, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, an inherited condition known as G6PD deficiency, or if you ever had an injury to a tendon or muscle.
Alert your doctor if you have bowel disease, especially colitis (inflammation of the colon).
If you are being treated with Ciprofloxacin for sexually transmitted disease, you should follow your doctor's advice on ways to prevent passing the disease to others. You should also avoid sexual contact until the doctor certifies that you are cleared of the infection.
Drink plenty of water while being treated with Ciprofloxacin, unless your doctor has specifically told you to restrict your fluid intake.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Ciprofloxacin if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to similar antibiotics such as levofloxacin, lomefloxacin, moxifloxacin, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin or ofloxacin.
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take Ciprofloxacin if you are pregnant.
Do not give Ciprofloxacin to children or teenagers unless instructed by the doctor.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Do not take Ciprofloxacin with dairy products such as milk, cheese, yoghurt or ice-cream. Dairy products reduce the effectiveness of Ciprofloxacin when taken at the same time. Take Ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you have taken any dairy products.
Avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea and certain soft drinks.

Other common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, stomach wind, an unusual taste in the mouth and headache. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Ciprofloxacin may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct or prolonged exposure to the sun or ultraviolet (UV) light, including tanning beds and sun lamps.
Alert your doctor if you experience any pain in your joints or muscles.
How should I store this medicine?
