How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Furosemide+Amiloride exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Furosemide+Amiloride must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking it even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.
You may take Furosemide+Amiloride with or without food. If you experience stomach discomfort with this medicine, take it with food.
Try to take this medicine at the same time each day.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have any of these or other conditions:
- low blood pressure
- diabetes (monitor your blood sugar levels more closely)
- urination difficulties
Alert your doctor if you are allergic to sulfur medicines.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to this medicine regularly. He may also need to do routine blood tests while you are being treated with Furosemide+Amiloride.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Furosemide+Amiloride.
If you are going for a glucose test, inform the doctor that you are taking Furosemide+Amiloride as it can interfere with certain glucose tests.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have liver, kidney or prostate disease, or if you have diabetes or gout.
Alert your doctor if you have potassium or sodium imbalances or if you are taking any other types of "water pills".
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Furosemide+Amiloride.
Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Furosemide+Amiloride. This medicine goes into your breastmilk and is not suitable for your baby.
Furosemide+Amiloride is not suitable for children younger than 18 years old.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Do not take potassium supplements unless you have been specifically told to do so by your doctor. Avoid taking too much food that is high in potassium, such as orange juice, bananas or prunes. Do not use salt substitutes that contain potassium.
Why do I need this medicine?
Furosemide and Amiloride are combined together in this medicine.
This medicine is used to treat water retention caused by heart failure, kidney or liver disease. Water retention may be noticed as swelling of the feet, ankles, lower leg and hands. For this reason, it is commonly called a "water pill".
This medicine also helps to keep your blood pressure under control.
What side effects could I experience?
Furosemide+Amiloride may cause weakness, dizziness or drowsiness. You may also feel dizzy when you get up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking it for the very first time. This is normal and should go away as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down until you feel better. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Furosemide+Amiloride may also cause nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, thirst, stomach discomfort, headache, muscle cramps, tiredness, rash, itch, constipation or diarrhoea. Alert your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away.
You may need to pass urine more often while you are being treated with Furosemide+Amiloride. This urination effect may last for up to 6 hours after a dose. As your body adjusts to the medicine, this urination effect should also decrease.
This medicine may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
Some side effects may be serious although they are not common. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience:
- swollen ankles
- severe stomach or back pain
- difficulty breathing
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- muscle weakness or cramping
- hearing problems such as loss of hearing, ringing or buzzing sounds in the ear
- fainting or mental confusion
- prolonged or worsening muscle weakness, dizziness or drowsiness
- increased thirst
- unexplained bruising
- dark urine (almost the colour of tea)
- yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes
Inform your doctor if you experience any other side effects.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- any other water pills
- medicines for high blood pressure or heart problems eg digoxin, captopril or enalapril
- diabetes medicines
- antibiotics such as amikacin or gentamicin
- epilepsy (fits) medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine
- lithium (mood medicine)
- probenecid (gout medicine)
- theophylline (asthma medicine)
- sucralfate (this should be separated 2 hours from Furosemide+Amiloride)
- cancer medicines such as cisplatin or methotrexate
- NSAID painkillers such as diclofenac, naproxen, mefenamic acid and related
- ciclosporin or tacrolimus (medicines used in transplant or certain immune disorders)
- potassium supplements
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
