How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Furosemide+Amiloride exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Furosemide+Amiloride must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking it even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

You may take Furosemide+Amiloride with or without food. If you experience stomach discomfort with this medicine, take it with food.

Inform your doctor if you have any of these or other conditions:

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to sulfur medicines.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to this medicine regularly. He may also need to do routine blood tests while you are being treated with Furosemide+Amiloride.

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Furosemide+Amiloride.

If you are going for a glucose test, inform the doctor that you are taking Furosemide+Amiloride as it can interfere with certain glucose tests.

Why do I need this medicine?

Furosemide and Amiloride are combined together in this medicine.

This medicine is used to treat water retention caused by heart failure, kidney or liver disease. Water retention may be noticed as swelling of the feet, ankles, lower leg and hands. For this reason, it is commonly called a "water pill".

This medicine also helps to keep your blood pressure under control.

What side effects could I experience?

Furosemide+Amiloride may cause weakness, dizziness or drowsiness. You may also feel dizzy when you get up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking it for the very first time. This is normal and should go away as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down until you feel better. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Furosemide+Amiloride may also cause nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, thirst, stomach discomfort, headache, muscle cramps, tiredness, rash, itch, constipation or diarrhoea. Alert your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away.

You may need to pass urine more often while you are being treated with Furosemide+Amiloride. This urination effect may last for up to 6 hours after a dose. As your body adjusts to the medicine, this urination effect should also decrease.

This medicine may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.

- swollen ankles
