How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Codeine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor. Do not take Codeine more often than instructed by the doctor.
You may stop taking Codeine when you have no more pain or cough. Do not take Codeine for a longer period of time than instructed by your doctor.
You may take Codeine with or without food.
If you have been given the syrup, shake it well to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
Do not give Codeine to a child unless instructed by the child's doctor.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have kidney, liver, lung, thyroid or adrenal gland disease.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Codeine.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol, even in small quantities, can worsen the drowsiness caused by Codeine. It can also affect your reaction time and make it unsafe for you to drive or take part in activities in which you need to be alert.
Why do I need this medicine?
Codeine is a painkiller used to treat mild to moderate pain.
Codeine also helps to suppress cough. It is used to treat dry coughs (coughs that do not produce much phlegm).
What side effects could I experience?
Codeine causes drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. Your level of alertness and reaction time may be affected by Codeine.
Codeine may also cause headache, constipation and dry mouth.
These side effects are temporary and should go away after the medicine is stopped.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- mood medicines, antidepressants or sedatives
- cough and cold medicines
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
