  • AMIODARONE 100mg/1ml

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Amiodarone exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may need to take Amiodarone for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Do not be discouraged if you do not feel better soon after taking the medicine. Amiodarone must be taken regularly for it to work well.

Continue taking Amiodarone even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen rapidly if Amiodarone is stopped suddenly.

Amiodarone may be taken with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Swallow it whole, do not chew or crush.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver or thyroid disease, eye problems, asthma or other lung diseases.

As Amiodarone may have some effects on the liver, lungs and the thyroid gland, you may need to have regular check-ups and blood tests to monitor the effects of Amiodarone on your body. Alert your doctor if you develop difficulty breathing, or if you notice any yellowing of your eyes or skin. Also alert your doctor if you develop palpitations, a pounding heartbeat or if you feel unusually lethargic or weak. Alert your doctor if you feel that your heart condition is getting worse.

You will also need to have eye tests once a year. This is to ensure that your vision remains good while being treated with Amiodarone. Alert your doctor if you notice any changes to your vision.

Amiodarone may also cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct or long hours of exposure to the sun and other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light like tanning beds or sun lamps. If you must go out into the sun, cover up with long sleeves, long pants and a hat.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, always inform your doctor, surgeon or dentist that you are taking Amiodarone.

Alert your doctor if you have an implantable cardiac device such as a pacemaker or cardioverter defibrillator.

It is important to keep all appointments with the doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your heart condition and check your response to the medication regularly.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have an allergy to iodine.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are planning to have a baby. Use effective birth control methods while being treated with Amiodarone and for several months after you stop treatment with Amiodarone.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Amiodarone passes into the breast milk. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Amiodarone.

Amiodarone may not be suitable for certain heart conditions. Alert your doctor to any heart conditions that you have.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Do not take grapefruit juice while you are being treated with Amiodarone. Grapefruit juice affects the absorption of Amiodarone from the stomach.

Why do I need this medicine?

Amiodarone is used to treat arrhythmia -- a heart disease where the heartbeat is not regular or is too fast. When the heart is not pumping regularly or is pumping too fast, blood cannot be efficiently pumped out of the heart to other parts of the body.

Amiodarone slows down the heart rate and helps to make the heartbeat more regular.

What side effects could I experience?

Amiodarone may cause tiredness and weakness. It can also affect your eyesight, causing blurred vision and a halo effect especially in bright light. Alert your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or be able to see clearly.

Amiodarone may also cause nausea, vomiting, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, uncontrolled muscle movements, constipation, loss of appetite, problems sleeping, mood changes, numbness, tingling of the fingers and toes ("pins and needles") or skin discolouration. Alert your doctor if these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

Other side effects are less common but may be serious. You may need urgent medical attention. Alert your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms:
- worsening of your heart condition
- wheezing
- difficulty breathing
- chest pain
- abnormally slow heart beat
- palpitations or a pounding heart beat
- severe agitation or if you feel extremely restless
- unusually excessive sweating or intolerance to heat
- unusual or severe lethargy or weakness
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- blurred or decreased vision
- "halo effect" type of vision
- rashes
- blisters on the skin or severe sunburn

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Amiodarone may affect the way other medicines work. There are also several other medicines that can affect the way Amiodarone works in your body.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
