How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Pyrimethamine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Pyrimethamine at regular intervals as directed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course unless otherwise directed. If you do not complete the course, the infection may not clear completely.

Take Pyrimethamine together with food or immediately after a meal.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

For as long as you are taking Pyrimethamine, you will need to have regular blood tests to make sure that your blood counts are normal. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests. Your doctor may also give you some folic acid tablets to prevent blood disorders that may occur in people taking high doses of Pyrimethamine.

If you are taking Pyrimethamine for the prevention of malaria, remember that Pyrimethamine only reduces the risk of getting malaria. Pyrimethamine does not totally prevent malaria.

Therefore, in addition to taking Pyrimethamine, you must also take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. Use an effective insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to reduce exposure and avoid going out between dusk to dawn. Effective insect repellents should contain at least 20-33% diethyltoluamide (DEET).

The symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and a flu-like illness. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms during travel, and anytime within 1 year after leaving the area, especially within 3 months of your return.

If you suspect that you have malaria, it is very important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Do not delay treatment.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have anaemia or any kind of blood disorder. Alert your doctor if you have a history of epilepsy (seizures, fits), liver or kidney disease, intestinal problems that make it difficult to digest or absorb food, folate deficiency or an inherited condition known as G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency.

Let your doctor know if you drink alcohol frequently or in large quantities.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with Pyrimethamine. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not breastfeed while being treated with Pyrimethamine.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Pyrimethamine is used together with other medicines for the treatment and prevention of malaria. It may also be used to treat certain bacterial infections.

What side effects could I experience?

Stomach discomfort, nausea and loss of appetite are common side effects with Pyrimethamine. Take Pyrimethamine with food to minimise these side effects.

At the first sign of rashes, stop Pyrimethamine and see your doctor quickly.

Other side effects may be less common but may have more serious consequences. Alert your doctor quickly if you have sore throat, pale appearance, bruising, inflammation or redness of the tongue.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place.

Keep Pyrimethamine away from the reach of children as accidental ingestion of Pyrimethamine in children may be fatal.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines: sulphonamides, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination (also known as co-trimoxazole), methotrexate, proguanil, phenytoin or zidovudine.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
