How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Donepezil exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Donepezil must be taken regularly for it to be effective. It may take several weeks before you notice any improvement in your condition. Continue taking Donepezil even when there are signs of improvement. Do not stop taking Donepezil unless instructed by your doctor.
Donepezil can be taken with or without food. Take Donepezil every night just before you go to bed.
If you have been given the normal tablet, swallow it with a glass of water or other liquid.
If you have been given the orally disintegrating tablet (labelled as "ODT"), place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve. Swallow the dissolved tablet and drink a glass of water after that.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have heart or liver disease, stomach ulcers, epilepsy (fits), asthma or other lung problems, prostrate enlargement or urination difficulties.
Inform your doctor immediately if you faint, vomit bloody or coffee brown material or pass out black sticky stool.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Donepezil.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Donepezil.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Donepezil helps to improve symptoms of dementia in Alzheimer's disease.
Donepezil cannot cure Alzheimer's disease, but it can improve the quality of life for people who have Alzheimer's disease.
What side effects could I experience?
Donepezil may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
You may have digestive complaints such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and loss of appetite when you take Donepezil. You may also feel unusually tired, have muscle cramps and problems sleeping.
These side effects usually pass as your body adjusts to the medicine. Inform your doctor if you experience any other side effects which trouble you or which do not go away.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen
- antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole
- quinidine (a heart medicine)
- mood medicines such as fluoxetine
- TB medicine such as rifampicin
- epilepsy medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine
- other medicines for treatment of dementia
- herbs such as St. John's wort and ginkgo biloba
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
