How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Sodium Valproate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Sodium Valproate must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop taking Sodium Valproate unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if Sodium Valproate is stopped suddenly.

Take Sodium Valproate after meals with a glass of water.

If you have been given the "Chrono" tablet, controlled-release tablet or enteric-coated (EC) tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush these tablets.

If you are not sure which specific type of tablet you have been given, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have been given the oral solution (syrup), do not take it with soft drinks as this will irritate your mouth and throat. Use the dropper provided to measure out your dose.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, lupus (also known as systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE) or diabetes.

For the first 6 months of treatment, you will need to have regular blood tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests done.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are being treated with Sodium Valproate.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you or your family members have liver disease, or if you have a blood disorder called porphyria.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You must use appropriate birth control methods while being treated with Sodium Valproate. Discuss this with your doctor.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Sodium Valproate is used to treat epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures). It may be used on its own or together with other epilepsy medicines.

Sodium Valproate may also be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.

What side effects could I experience?

Sodium Valproate may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Sodium Valproate may also cause nausea, stomach discomfort, flu-like symptoms, tremors and unusual eye movements. Women may experience changes in the menstrual cycle. Inform your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

Alert your doctor immediately if you experience stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, swelling of the legs, repeated vomiting, extreme tiredness or worsening of your fits.
