How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Methylphenidate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Methylphenidate must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking it even when there are signs of improvement. Do not stop taking Methylphenidate unless instructed by the doctor.

Methylphenidate should be taken early in the day, preferably before noon. Otherwise, it may affect your sleep at night.

There are different brands of Methylphenidate available and the different brands may be taken differently. Ask your doctor if you should take your Methylphenidate with food, without food or if it can be taken with or without food.

If you have been given the extended-release tablet or capsule, swallow it whole with a glass of water. Extended-release forms are usually marked with the words "LA", "SR" or "CD".

Do not switch brands unless your doctor has told you to do so.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, epilepsy (fits or seizures), bowel or digestive tract blockage.

Inform your doctor if you are alcoholic or dependent on drugs.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Methylphenidate.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Methylphenidate.

While you are being treated with Methylphenidate, you will need to see your doctor regularly to monitor your response to the medicine. Your doctor may also need to adjust your dosage, especially during the first few months of treatment.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have heart disease or heart defects.

Alert your doctor if you have high blood pressure or if you ever had a stroke.

Alert your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, especially those listed here:

- eye problems such as glaucoma
- anxiety, depression, mood or psychiatric problems
- agitation or tension
- overactive thyroid

Alert your doctor if you or your family ever had motor or speech tics (uncontrolled movements or sounds), or Tourette's syndrome.

Methylphenidate is not meant for children younger than 6 years old.

Do not take Methylphenidate if you are currently taking or have previously taken a medicine called a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) in the last 14 days. Some examples of MAOIs are moclobemide (a mood medicine)and selegiline (a Parkinson's Disease medicine).

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Avoid taking too much caffeine-containing drinks such as coffee, tea and certain soft drinks.

Why do I need this medicine?

Methylphenidate is used to treat attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).

People with ADHD may have problems concentrating on a given task and may have short attention spans. They may also be impulsive, restless and hyperactive.

Methylphenidate is meant to be taken as part of a complete ADHD care programme which includes psychological, educational and social measures.

Methylphenidate is also used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness (narcolepsy).

What side effects could I experience?

Methylphenidate may cause nervousness, problems sleeping, appetite loss, stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and headache.

Methylphenidate may also cause drowsiness or dizziness. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, fainting, mood changes, increased hostility or aggression. Parents should monitor their child for mood or behavioural changes.

Methylphenidate may cause other side effects. Alert your doctor if you have unusual problems while being treated with Methylphenidate.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Methylphenidate if you are currently taking or have taken a mood medicine known as MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) in the last 14 days.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- high blood pressure medicines
- mood medicines such as amitriptyline, imipramine, chlorpromazine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, MAOIs (eg. isocarboxazid, moclobemide, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine)
- epilepsy medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine
- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
