How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Rivastigmine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Always take Rivastigmine with food. You may take it immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
If you have been given the capsule, swallow it whole with a glass of water.
If you have been given the oral solution, use the oral dosing syringe provided to draw out the dose from the bottle. The solution may be swallowed directly from the syringe. To make it easier to swallow, you may choose to mix it with a small glass of cold fruit juice or a fizzy drink. However, do make sure the solution is taken within 4 hours of mixing. Do not leave the medicine to stand after you have mixed it.
Rivastigmine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking Rivastigmine even when there are signs of improvement. Do not stop taking Rivastigmine unless instructed by the doctor.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert the doctor if you have heart, liver or kidney disease, or if you suffer from asthma, prostate enlargement, urination difficulties or epilepsy.
Inform the doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Rivastigmine.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery or dental work, inform the surgeon or dentist that you are taking Rivastigmine.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert the doctor if you have a history of stomach ulcers.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Rivastigmine helps to improve symptoms of dementia in Alzheimer's Disease or in Parkinson's Disease.
Rivastigmine cannot cure Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease, but it can improve the quality of life for people who have these illnesses.
What side effects could I experience?
Rivastigmine causes dizziness and drowsiness. This is common especially at the beginning of treatment or when the dose is increased. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
You may have stomach discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, loss of appetite and indigestion. You may also feel unusually tired, or have a general feeling of being unwell. Headaches are also common.
Sometimes, the doctor may adjust your treatment by increasing the dose slowly over a period of time. During this dose adjustment period, you may experience side effects previously not experienced. Patients with Parkinson's may experience parkinsonian symptoms such as tremor and stomach complaints. Let the doctor know if this happens.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Keep the medicine at a temperature lower than 30 ÂºC. Do not refrigerate or freeze it.
The oral solution should be used within 1 month after opening.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Let your doctor know if you are taking any medicines for your heart.
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
