Ingredients

  • FLUDARABINE PHOSPHATE 10mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Fludarabine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Do not stop taking Fludarabine unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

You may take Fludarabine with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole, with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Drink lots of water (about 2-3 litres everyday) while being treated with Fludarabine, unless your doctor has specifically told you not to do so.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, epilepsy or nerve disorders.

For as long as you are taking Fludarabine, you will need to have regular blood tests to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have the blood tests.

Do not have any vaccinations without first asking your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have any blood disorders such as anaemia.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Fludarabine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while on Fludarabine, alert your doctor immediately. Fludarabine may cause harm to your unborn child. Both men and women must use proven birth control methods while taking Fludarabine. These birth control methods must be used during treatment and for at least 6 months after treatment has been completed. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Fludarabine.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Fludarabine is used to treat cancer of the white blood cells. This type of cancer is known as leukaemia.

Fludarabine may also be used to treat other types of cancer, as decided by your doctor.

What side effects could I experience?

Fludarabine will cause the level of your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to drop.

Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients around your body. When the level of red blood cells fall, you may often feel tired and weak.

White blood cells help your body to fight infections. When the level of your white blood cells drops, it may put you at higher risk for infections, such as coughs, colds and flu, which may lead to more serious infections. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick. Alert your doctor if you have a fever, or a cough or flu that does not go away.

Platelets help your blood to clot when there is a cut in the skin. When the level of your platelets drops, you may be at risk of bleeding more than usual. Do not participate in activities in which you may fall or get injured, such as contact sports. Alert your doctor if you get any unusual bruising (large bruises or several bruises) or bleeding that takes a long time to stop (for example, too much bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth).

You may also have diarrhoea, rashes, headaches, nausea, mouth ulcers, numbness or tingling in your hands and feet.

Fludarabine may also cause dizziness, tiredness and blurred vision. If you are affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

If any of these side effects become severe or do not go away, alert your doctor.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

As Fludarabine is a cancer medicine, always return any unused or expired tablets to the clinic, hospital or pharmacy for disposal. Do not throw it away in the household waste.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Fludarabine together with a cancer medicine known as pentostatin.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, for example:

- other cancer medicines such as pentostatin, cytarabine
- blood-thinning medicines such as aspirin or dipyridamole

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
