Ingredients

  • GABAPENTIN 100mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Gabapentin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may need to take Gabapentin for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue to take it even when you feel better. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop taking Gabapentin unless advised by your doctor to do so. Do not stop taking Gabapentin suddenly as this may worsen your condition. Your doctor will gradually reduce the dose before stopping it or changing it to another medicine.

You may take Gabapentin with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you are taking Gabapentin for the very first time, take the first dose just before going to bed to reduce the side effects of drowsiness and dizziness. Thereafter, take it at intervals as directed by your doctor.

Gabapentin is available in different strengths. Make sure you know which strength you are usually given.

Do not give Gabapentin to children unless instructed by the doctor.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Gabapentin.

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery or dental work, alert your doctor or dentist that you are taking Gabapentin.

Gabapentin is not a painkiller. Do not take Gabapentin for any other purpose other than what your doctor has advised.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease or a history of psychiatric problems.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Gabapentin is used to treat epilepsy (also known as seizures or fits).

It is also used to relieve nerve pain in people with diabetes or shingles.

Gabapentin may also be used to relieve hot flushes in women with breast cancer and in women who have passed menopause.

What side effects could I experience?

Gabapentin may cause dizziness and drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. Gabapentin may also cause balance or coordination problems. It is not safe for you to drive or operate machinery until you know if Gabapentin affects your balance or coordination.

Gabapentin may cause nausea, diarrhoea, dry mouth, stomach discomfort, sleepiness, tiredness and eyesight problems such as double vision or blurred vision.

Alert your doctor if any side effects are severe or if they do not go away.

In children being treated with Gabapentin, other side effects such as behavioural problems, anxiety, restlessness, depression and mood changes may occur. Alert the doctor if such side effects occur.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Gabapentin at the same time as antacids. Antacids reduce the effectiveness of Gabapentin. If you must take antacids, take it 2 hours before taking Gabapentin.

Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- a painkiller called morphine
- a gastric medicine called cimetidine

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
