Ingredients

  • APRACLONIDINE 0.50%

How do I take/use this medicine?

Apply Apraclonidine in the affected eye(s) exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not stop treatment with Apraclonidine unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

Follow these steps:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before applying the eye drop.
2. Tilt your head slightly backwards and look upwards.
3. Use your finger to gently pull the lower eyelid down.
4. Apply the required number of drops inside the lower eyelid.
5. Close your eye and gently press the corner of your eye (near the nose bridge) for 1 minute.
6. If you have been given other eye drops to be used together with Apraclonidine, wait 5 minutes in between eye drops.

Do not allow the tip of the eye drop bottle to touch your eyes, eyelids or other surfaces. Recap the eye drop immediately after use. If the eye drop becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your eyes.

If you are wearing soft contact lenses, remove them before applying Apraclonidine.

Do not share your eye drop with anyone else.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you suffer from any of these conditions:

- previous or recent heart attack
- previous or recent stroke
- liver or kidney disease
- poor blood circulation especially in the brain or heart, or a particular condition known as Raynaud's phenomenon
- inflammation of the blood vessels (Buerger's disease)
- low blood pressure
- depression
- Parkinson's disease
- eye infection

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to a medicine known as brimonidine.

Some preparations of Apraclonidine contain benzalkonium chloride as a preservative. This may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. If you are using contact lenses, you should remove your lenses when applying the eye drop. Wait for at least 15 minutes before reinserting your lenses.

You will need to have your eyes checked regularly to monitor the pressure in your eyes. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests. It is important that you keep all appointments with your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have heart disease, heart failure or high blood pressure.

Do not use Apraclonidine if you are taking any mood medicines such as mianserin, or antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Some examples of MAOIs include isocarboxazid, phenelzine, moclobemide, selegiline and tranylcypromine. Examples of TCAs include amitriptyline, nortriptyline, desipramine, imipramine and doxepin. Alert your doctor if you are taking or have taken any of these medicines or other MAOIs or TCAs.

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to another medicine called clonidine.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Apraclonidine.

Apraclonidine is not meant for children younger than 12 years old. Do not give Apraclonidine to any child unless specifically instructed to do so by the child's doctor.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Apraclonidine is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure in the eye.

It is also used to prevent the pressure in the eye from rising too much after eye surgery.

Apraclonidine helps to lower the pressure in the eye. If left untreated, an increase in pressure within the eye can cause loss of vision and damage to the eyes.

What side effects could I experience?

Apraclonidine may make you feel drowsy, dizzy or tired. It may also temporarily blur your vision. If you are affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or be able to see clearly.

Common side effects of Apraclonidine include eye irritation, itch, redness and dryness, sensitivity to light and changes in your vision. Inform your doctor if these side effects are severe or if they do not go away.

Other side effects of Apraclonidine include weakness, flu-like symptoms, headache, dry mouth, dry nose, unpleasant taste in the mouth and indigestion.

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Apraclonidine.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Throw away any remaining eye drops 4 weeks after opening. Mark the date of opening on the eye drop bottle so that you know when the bottle was opened.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not use Apraclonidine if you are taking any mood medicines such as mianserin, or antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Some examples of MAOIs include isocarboxazid, phenelzine, moclobemide, selegiline and tranylcypromine. Examples of TCAs include amitriptyline, nortriptyline, desipramine, imipramine and doxepin. Alert your doctor if you are taking or have taken any of these medicines or other MAOIs or TCAs.

Inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines for heart problems, high blood pressure, depression, pain or any other medicines to lower the pressure in your eyes.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
