How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Abacavir+Lamivudine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Abacavir+Lamivudine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Take Abacavir+Lamivudine at regular intervals as instructed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take Abacavir+Lamivudine even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled. Your condition may worsen if Abacavir+Lamivudine is stopped suddenly.

If you have stopped taking Abacavir+Lamivudine for a few days or have previously been told to stop Abacavir+Lamivudine, DO NOT restart Abacavir+Lamivudine without first consulting your doctor.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions, or any other illnesses:
- kidney disease
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- disease of the pancreas
- high cholesterol levels
- problems with your weight
- diabetes

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby. Use effective birth control methods while being treated with Abacavir+Lamivudine.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is best that you do not breastfeed as HIV passes into the breast milk. Avoid breastfeeding in order to reduce the risk of passing HIV to your baby.

Abacavir+Lamivudine is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. It only helps to slow down the development of HIV infection.

Abacavir+Lamivudine does not reduce your risk of passing the HIV infection to others through sexual contact or through contamination with infected blood. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading the HIV infection to others.

Both this medicine and HIV may weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to infections. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick to minimise the risk of catching an infection. While undergoing treatment, you may develop other infections or experience other health problems related to your HIV infection. Always keep your doctor updated on your condition and go for your appointed check-ups.

While being treated with Abacavir+Lamivudine, you will need to have regular blood tests. These blood tests help your doctor to monitor your condition and also to check if your blood counts are normal. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these blood tests.

People who have a certain gene called HLA-B*5701 have a higher risk of developing serious allergic reactions with this medicine. Your doctor may order a gene test before starting you on this medicine to check if you have this gene. If you develop rashes and any of the below allergic symptoms while being treated with Abacavir+Lamivudine, contact your doctor immediately:

- fever
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or stomach pain
- severe tiredness, body aches or feeling unwell
- breathlessness, cough or sore throat
- eye inflammation or red eyes, mouth ulcers
- unusually low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting
- swelling of the mouth, tongue or face

These allergic reactions usually happen within the first 6 weeks of taking Abacavir+Lamivudine but it can also happen at any time while you are being treated with this medicine. If you develop any of these symptoms, be sure to alert your doctor immediately as you may need urgent medical attention.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, always inform your doctor, surgeon or dentist that you are taking Abacavir+Lamivudine. Do not receive any vaccinations without first checking with your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to Abacavir, Lamivudine or similar medicines.

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease, hepatitis B or C infection.

If this medicine is meant for your child, alert the doctor if the child has ever had disease of the pancreas.

Abacavir+Lamivudine is not meant for children younger than 12 years old.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

This medicine contains 2 different types of anti-viral medicines:
1. Abacavir
2. Lamivudine (also known as 3TC)

Abacavir+Lamivudine is used together with other anti-viral medications to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. HIV infection can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Abacavir+Lamivudine is used to treat HIV infection in adults and children.

Abacavir+Lamivudine is not a cure for HIV. It only helps to keep the virus in check and can help improve the quality of life. It does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people.

What side effects could I experience?

Some common side effects of Abacavir+Lamivudine include rashes, fever, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, muscle ache, joint pain, tiredness, hair loss, mood changes, unusual dreams and problems sleeping.

It is not known if this medicine could cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Alert your doctor if these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.

Abacavir may cause serious allergic reactions usually within the first 6 weeks of treatment, but it can also happen at any time while you are being treated with this medicine. IF YOU DEVELOP RASHES AND ANY OF THE BELOW ALLERGIC SYMPTOMS, CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY:

- fever
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or stomach pain
- severe tiredness, body aches or feeling unwell
- breathlessness, cough or sore throat
- eye inflammation or red eyes, mouth ulcers
- unusually low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting
- swelling of the mouth, tongue or face

Other side effects are not common but may also be serious. You may need urgent medical attention. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop any of these side effects:

- lactic acidosis. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, generally feeling unwell, rapid breathing, and muscle weakness affecting your movements. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of lactic acidosis.

- chest pain
- fits or seizures
- unusual tiredness, breathing problems, weakness, bluish lips or fast heartbeat (signs of anaemia)
- signs of an infection such as fever, chills, persistent cough, flu-like symptoms, breathlessness or sore throat (signs of neutropenia)
- white patches on your tongue or the inside of your mouth
- severe or persistent joint aches and pains
- joint stiffness and problems moving around
- muscle weakness or pain
- abdominal pain with yellowing of the skin and white of your eyes
- numbness, tingling and pain in the arms or legs
- fat accumulation around the neck, abdomen or chest

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Abacavir+Lamivudine.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Abacavir+Lamivudine together with anti-viral medicines known as emtricitabine or zalcitabine.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- other anti-viral medicines such as ribavirin, ganciclovir, valganciclovir, foscarnet or alpha interferon
- other HIV medicines such as indinavir or ritonavir
- antibiotics known as co-trimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or trimethoprim
- phenytoin (a medicine for fits)
- methadone (a pain killer)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
