Ingredients

  • MEFLOQUINE 250mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

If you are taking Mefloquine for the prevention of malaria, the tablets should be taken once a week on the same day each week. Prevention should be started 1-3 weeks before travel, continued during travel and for 4 weeks after leaving the area. It is advisable to start Mefloquine at least 2 weeks before travel so that there is enough time to change to an alternative preventive medication if you experience severe side effects with Mefloquine.

If you are taking Mefloquine for the treatment of malaria, take it exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course unless otherwise directed. If you do not complete the course, the infection may not clear completely.

Take Mefloquine with a full glass of water. Take it together with food or immediately after a meal to minimise stomach discomfort.

For children who cannot swallow tablets, the tablets may be crushed and mixed with liquid beverages or food, this also helps to mask its bitter taste.

Do not give Mefloquine to a child unless instructed by the child's doctor.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

If you are taking Mefloquine for a long period of time, you may need to have regular blood tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine. You may also need regular eye check-ups to ensure that Mefloquine does not cause any eye problems. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

If you are taking Mefloquine for the prevention of malaria, remember that Mefloquine only reduces the risk of getting malaria. Mefloquine does not totally prevent malaria.

Therefore, in addition to taking Mefloquine, you must also take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. Use an effective insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to reduce exposure and avoid going out between dusk to dawn. Effective insect repellents should contain at least 20-33% diethyltoluamide (DEET).

The symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and a flu-like illness. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms during travel, and anytime within 1 year after leaving the area, especially within 3 months of your return.

If you suspect that you have malaria, it is very important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Do not delay treatment.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Mefloquine if you have a history of allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, severe rash, swollen eyes) to similar medicines such as quinine and quinidine.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should avoid getting pregnant while being treated with Mefloquine. You may wish to discuss birth-control methods with your doctor or pharmacist. Avoid pregnancy for at least 3 months after you stop taking Mefloquine.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Mefloquine.

Mefloquine may not be suitable for you if you have a history of epilepsy (seizures or fits), depression, anxiety or other psychiatric problems. Alert your doctor if you have heart, liver or kidney problems.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Mefloquine is used for the treatment and prevention of malaria.

What side effects could I experience?

Mefloquine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. The dizziness may remain for up to 3 weeks after you complete the course of Mefloquine.

Other side effects with Mefloquine may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, headache, mood disturbances (e.g. confusion, depression, anxiety), sleep disturbances (e.g. difficulty sleeping, abnormal dreams) and rashes.

Consult your doctor if any side effects are severe or cannot be tolerated, so that an alternative malaria preventive medication can be given to you.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Mefloquine with other antimalarial medications such as chloroquine, halofantrine, quinidine or quinine. Vaccination with oral live typhoid vaccine must be completed 3 days before taking Mefloquine; it should not be taken together.

Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:

- epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbitone, sodium valproate
- blood pressure or heart medicines

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
