How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Lorazepam exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Do not take Lorazepam for a longer period of time than instructed by your doctor.

In some medical conditions, such as anxiety and insomnia, it is not advisable to take Lorazepam long-term. See your doctor if Lorazepam does not seem to help you.

If you are taking Lorazepam as a sleeping pill, you should take it only when you have problems sleeping and when you are able to sleep for 7-8 hours without being interrupted. Take it just before you go to bed.

If you have been taking Lorazepam over a certain period of time, do not stop taking Lorazepam suddenly as this may cause withdrawal symptoms such as headache, restlessness and confusion. Your doctor will reduce the dose of Lorazepam gradually before stopping it completely. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

You may take Lorazepam with or without food.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Alert your doctor if you are an alcoholic or if you have a history of drug abuse.

Lorazepam is usually used for a short period of time only. Do not take Lorazepam for a longer period of time than instructed by your doctor. If you are taking Lorazepam as a sleeping pill, take it only when you need to. Try not to make a habit of relying on Lorazepam to help you sleep.

If you are taking Lorazepam as a long-term medication, you may need to have regular blood tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Lorazepam. Do not take Lorazepam if you are pregnant .

It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with Lorazepam. Use appropriate birth control.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Lorazepam.

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction to other sleeping pills, such as diazepam, midazolam, alprazolam and others.

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease or an eye disease known as glaucoma.

Alert your doctor if you have lung or breathing problems such as sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, depression or a history of depression, any mood or psychiatric problems, or if you are at risk of falls.

Do not give Lorazepam to children, unless specifically instructed by the child's doctor.

Lorazepam is not meant for children younger than 12 years old.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol as this may increase the drowsiness caused by Lorazepam.

Why do I need this medicine?

Lorazepam helps to relieve anxiety, especially if it is accompanied by problems sleeping (also known as insomnia).

It is also used to help you relax before surgery and dental procedures.

Lorazepam may also be used together with other medicines to reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

What side effects could I experience?

Lorazepam may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Lorazepam may also cause blurred vision and unsteadiness. Do not drive or take part in any activities in which you need to be alert.

Lorazepam may also cause weakness, some memory loss, confusion and changes in libido and appetite.

Lorazepam may cause aggressiveness, restlessness, irritability, hallucinations, nightmares or abnormal behaviour in some people. Alert your doctor if you experience these symptoms.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:

- other sleeping pills
- any medications that cause drowsiness such as opioid (morphine-like) pain-killers, antihistamines and medicines for mood and personality disorders
- sodium valproate (epilepsy medicine)
- theophylline (asthma medicine)
- probenecid (gout medicine)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
