Ingredients

  • METHOTREXATE 2.5mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Methotrexate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

In the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, Methotrexate is usually taken ONCE a week only. Make sure you take it on the same day of each week.

You will need to take Methotrexate for some time (possibly weeks or months) before the full benefits can be felt. Continue to take it even when you feel better and do not stop taking it unless advised by your doctor to do so.

Methotrexate is best taken with or after a meal; this will help minimise any stomach discomfort that might occur. Take Methotrexate with a full glass of water.

Methotrexate tablets may come in 2 different strengths -- as a 2.5 mg tablet or as a 10 mg tablet. Make sure you know which strength you are usually given. Do not mix the 2 different strengths.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

For as long as you are taking Methotrexate, you will need to have regular blood tests to make sure that your blood counts, kidney and liver function are normal. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests. It is important that you keep all appointments with your doctor. Do not miss your appointments.

Inform any other doctors, surgeons, pharmacists or dentists whom you see that you are taking Methotrexate.

Drink lots of water -- at least 8 glasses every day.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Methotrexate if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while on Methotrexate, alert your doctor immediately. Methotrexate may cause harm to your unborn child. Both men and women must use proven contraception while being treated with Methotrexate.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Methotrexate. Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, a low immunity due to other illnesses, blood disorders, stomach ulcers or bowel problems especially bowel inflammation or ulceration.

Methotrexate may not be suitable for you if you drink alcohol, especially if you are a frequent drinker. Alert your doctor if you drink alcohol.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Methotrexate is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It helps reduce joint pain and swelling by reducing inflammation in your joints.

It may also be used to treat severe psoriasis.

What side effects could I experience?

Common side effects with Methotrexate include nausea, stomach discomfort, a strange taste in the mouth, poor appetite and tiredness. Your skin may bruise more easily and you may become more sensitive to sunlight.

Avoid direct sunlight and do not use sun lamps in tanning salons. When outdoors, use a sunblock, wear a hat and long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin.

You may also fall ill with coughs, colds and the flu more often. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick, if possible.

Inform your doctor if you notice any other side effects which trouble you or which do not go away.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Methotrexate with these medicines:

- leflunomide (another type of RA medicine)
- aspirin and other painkillers known as NSAIDs, for example naproxen, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, indomethacin and others. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure
- trimethoprim and all penicillins (antibiotics)
- phenytoin, carbamazepine (epilepsy medicines)
- pyrimethamine (an anti-malarial medicine)
- theophylline (an asthma medicine)
- digoxin (a heart medicine)
- other medicines such as probenecid, ciclosporin, tamoxifen

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
