How do I take/use this medicine?

Apply Pilocarpine in the affected eye(s) exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not stop treatment with Pilocarpine unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

Pilocarpine is available as an eye drop or as an eye gel.

If you have been given the EYE DROP, apply it as follows:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before applying the eye drop.
2. Tilt your head slightly backwards and look upwards.
3. Use your finger to gently pull the lower eyelid down.
4. Apply the required number of drops inside the lower eyelid.
5. Close your eye and gently press the corner of your eye (near the nose bridge) for 1 minute.
6. If you have been given another eye drop to be used together with Pilocarpine, you should wait at least 5 minutes before applying the second eye drop.

If you have been given the EYE GEL, apply it as follows:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before applying the eye drop.
2. Tilt your head slightly backwards and look upwards.
3. Use your finger to gently pull the lower eyelid down. A "pouch" will be created.
4. Apply a thin ribbon of gel about 1-1.5 cm (0.5 inch) long into this "pouch".
5. Close your eye.
6. Move your eyeballs around in different directions while your eye is still closed. This will help the eye gel to spread evenly around the eye.
7. The eye gel should be applied at bedtime as it causes prolonged blurring of vision.

Do not allow the tip of the bottle to touch your eyes, eyelids or other surfaces. Recap the bottle immediately after use. If the eye drop or eye gel becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your eyes.

Pilocarpine eye drop or eye gel may contain a preservative known as benzalkonium chloride. This may discolour soft contact lenses and cause eye irritation. If you are wearing contact lenses, you should remove your lenses when applying the eye drop or eye gel. Wait for at least 15 minutes before reinserting your lenses.

Do not share your eye drop or eye gel with anyone else.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Pilocarpine.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

- heart disease or heart failure
- asthma or other lung disease
- stomach ulcer
- high blood pressure
- urinary tract blockage or kidney stones
- Parkinson's disease

Your doctor may need to do an eye examination called a fundus examination before starting you on Pilocarpine.

Keep all appointments with your doctor as he needs to monitor your eye pressure and your response to Pilocarpine.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have an eye infection or any other eye problems.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Pilocarpine is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure in the eye.

Pilocarpine helps to lower the pressure in the eye. If left untreated, an increase in pressure within the eye can cause loss of vision and damage to the eyes.

Pilocarpine may also be used before or during eye surgery to reduce the pressure in the eye.

It may also be used during eye examinations to reverse the effect of other eye drops used to dilate the eye.

What side effects could I experience?

Pilocarpine may cause blurred vision. This is only temporary but may last for as long as a few hours after each dose. Pilocarpine may also make it difficult for you to see in the dark or in poorly lighted places, or when you move from a lighted place to a dark place. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or be able to see clearly.

Other common side effects include eye irritation, pain, discomfort, itching, redness and eyelid irritation. It may also cause pain over the eyebrows and headache especially if you have just started treatment. Alert your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or if they do not go away.

Other side effects are rare but may need medical attention. Alert your doctor quickly if you develop any of these side effects:
- high blood pressure
- unusually fast or rapid heartbeat
- difficulty breathing
- wheezing
- nausea or vomiting
- diarrhoea
- tearing
- drooling or increased saliva secretion

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Store below 25°C. The bottle should be placed in the carton after use to protect the contents from light. Light may cause the medication to lose some of its effectiveness.

Do not put Pilocarpine eye drops or eye gel in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.

Do not use for longer than 28 days after the seal on the bottle has been broken.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using any other eye preparations, any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
