Ingredients

  • INDAPAMIDE 1.5mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Indapamide exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Indapamide must be taken regularly for it to work well. Continue taking Indapamide even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

Take Indapamide on a full stomach, after you have taken your meal. Try to take it at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole, do not chew or crush it.

You may need to pass urine more often while being treated with Indapamide. Take Indapamide early in the day so that you will not need to visit the toilet at night.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to sulfur medicines.

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Indapamide.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver, kidney, thyroid, parathyroid or prostate disease; or if you have diabetes, gout, high cholesterol or lupus (also known as systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE).

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Indapamide. Use proven birth-control methods while being treated with Indapamide. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Indapamide.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Your doctor may give you some potassium tablets while you are being treated with Indapamide. Alternatively, he may ask you to take more potassium-rich food such as bananas, prunes or orange juice.

Why do I need this medicine?

Indapamide is used to treat water retention caused by heart failure, kidney or liver disease. Water retention may be noticed as swelling of the feet, ankles, lower leg and hands. For this reason, Indapamide is commonly called a "water pill".

Indapamide also helps to keep your blood pressure under control.

What side effects could I experience?

Indapamide may cause muscle weakness, dizziness or drowsiness. If you are affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. Indapamide may make you dizzy when you get up from a sitting or lying down position. To minimise this problem, stand up slowly.

You may need to pass urine more often while you are being treated with Indapamide. This urination effect may last for up to 6 hours after a dose. As your body adjusts to the medicine, this urination effect should also decrease.

Indapamide may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.

Some side effects may be serious although they are not common. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience:

- hearing problems such as loss of hearing, ringing or buzzing sounds in the ear
- fainting or mental confusion
- prolonged or worsening muscle weakness, dizziness or drowsiness
- rashes
- sore throat with fever

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease, especially digoxin
- a mood medicine known as lithium
- a medicine for transplant or rheumatoid illness known as ciclosporin

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
