Ingredients

  • NORETHISTERONE 0.35mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Norethisterone exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Norethisterone with or without food.

If you are taking Norethisterone for birth control, start on the first day of your menstrual cycle. Take it at the same time every day. You should use extra birth control measures (such as a condom) for the first 7 days when you start your first pack of Norethisterone.

Norethisterone must be taken continuously for it to be effective. Always start a new pack of Norethisterone the next day when you have taken the last tablet from the current pack.

If you experience vomiting or diarrhoea while taking Norethisterone, you should use extra birth control measures (such as a condom) for next first 7 days as a precaution to prevent pregnancy.

If you are switching from another birth control method to Norethisterone, complete your current medication and start Norethisterone the very next day. There should be no gap between the 2 different birth control pills.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Norethisterone may not be suitable for you if you are breastfeeding. Discuss this with your doctor.

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions or any other illnesses:

- high blood pressure

- fits (epilepsy)
- water retention

- heart or kidney problems
- high cholesterol
- depression
- gallstones
- varicose veins

Alert your doctor if you have missed your period.

Your doctor will check your personal and family medical history and carry out a physical examination before starting you on Norethisterone. He will also discuss with you some possible risks of treatment, for example an increased risk of blood clotting, strokes or heart attacks.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Norethisterone. You may need to stop Norethisterone several weeks before your operation or if you cannot move around much for prolonged periods.

If you are going for any blood or urine tests, inform your doctor that you are taking Norethisterone as it can interfere with certain laboratory tests.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Norethisterone if you are pregnant.

Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

Norethisterone may also be used to treat endometriosis, a condition where abnormal growth of womb tissue causes painful, heavy or irregular periods.

It can also be used to treat other menstrual disorders such as excessive bleeding during periods and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Norethisterone is also used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in menopausal women and is used to treat breast cancer in certain patients.

What side effects could I experience?

When you first start Norethisterone, you may experience irregular periods, spotting or prolonged bleeding. This is normal and should get better with time as you continue to take the medicine. However, if you miss your period for 45 days or more, or if your periods last much longer than usual, alert your doctor immediately.

Norethisterone may also cause breast tenderness, stomach problems, rash, acne, headache, mood changes, changes in sexual drive, tiredness, as well as changes in weight and appetite. It may also cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Alert your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.
