Ingredients

  • RITONAVIR 100mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Ritonavir exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You should take Ritonavir tablets and Ritonavir oral solution with food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

If you have been given Ritonavir tablets, swallow it whole. Do not chew, cut or crush the tablets.

If you have been given Ritonavir oral solution, use the measuring cap provided to measure out your prescribed dose. You should take it alone or mix it with chocolate milk to improve the taste. Do not mix with water. Eat salty foods or drink fluids before or after taking Ritonavir oral solution to clear the aftertaste from your mouth.

Ritonavir must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not stop taking Ritonavir unless instructed by your doctor. If Ritonavir is stopped suddenly, your condition may get worse and become harder to treat.

Ritonavir is usually given together with other anti-HIV medicines. It is only one part of a HIV treatment programme and must be taken together with other anti-HIV medicines. Ensure that you take all your medicines exactly as directed by your doctor.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have any of these medical conditions:
- haemophilia (hereditary genetic disorder that impairs the body's ability to control blood clotting)
- kidney, heart or liver disease
- diabetes
- erectile dysfunction

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is best that you do not breastfeed as HIV passes into the breast milk. Avoid breastfeeding in order to reduce the risk of passing HIV to your baby.

Ritonavir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. It only helps to slow down the development of HIV infection.

Ritonavir does not reduce your risk of passing the HIV infection to others through sexual contact or through contamination with infected blood. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading the HIV infection to others.

Both Ritonavir and HIV may weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to infections. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick to minimise the risk of catching an infection. While undergoing treatment, you may develop other infections or experience other health problems related to your HIV infection. Always keep your doctor updated on your condition and go for your appointed check-ups.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to Ritonavir or similar anti-HIV medicines.

Alert your doctor if you have severe liver disease.

Do not take Ritonavir if you are taking any of these medicines:

Ritonavir is used together with other anti-HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) medicines to treat HIV infection. HIV infection can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It belongs to a group of anti-HIV medicines called protease inhibitors.

Ritonavir is used to treat HIV infection in adults and children.

Ritonavir is not a cure for HIV. It only helps to keep the virus in check and can help improve the quality of life. It does not prevent the spread of disease to other people.

What side effects could I experience?

Ritonavir causes sleepiness and dizziness. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Common side effects of Ritonavir may include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach ache, headache, feeling weak and tired, a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands, feet or around the lips and mouth and bad taste in the mouth.
