How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Nystatin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take Nystatin at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better and complete the entire course. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely. Fungal infection usually takes a longer time to heal. You may need to take Nystatin for a few weeks or months, depending on your doctor's advice.
You may take Nystatin with or without food.
If you have been given the lozenges, allow them to dissolve slowly in your mouth. Do not swallow or chew them.
If you have been given the oral drops or liquid, shake it well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed.
If you are using the oral liquid to treat fungal infections in the mouth, swish it around inside your mouth and hold it there for as long as possible (a few minutes) before swallowing. Wash the dropper with hot water before returning it to the bottle.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Maintain good oral hygiene, including the care of dentures. This is important in managing oral infections of the mouth.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, rashes, swollen eyes) to nystatin.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Nystatin is an antifungal medicine. It is used to treat fungal infections of the mouth and digestive system.
What side effects could I experience?
Nystatin may cause diarrhoea, nausea, upset stomach, rashes. These side effects are usually temporary. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Nystatin may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while taking this medicine.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
The oral drops can be stored at room temperature of up to 25Â°C; do not freeze.
Store the powder for oral suspension in the refrigerator between 2-8Â°C but do not freeze it otherwise it will become less effective. Once you have mixed the powder with water, take it immediately.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
