How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Phenytoin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Phenytoin must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop taking Phenytoin unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if Phenytoin is stopped suddenly.

Take Phenytoin with food. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not open, chew or crush the capsule.

Do not switch between different brands or dosage forms (for example, a capsule, tablet or syrup) unless advised by your doctor.

If you are on nasogastric feeding or enteral feeds, wait 1 to 2 hours before or after feeds before taking your dose of Phenytoin. Always flush the tubing with water after each dose of Phenytoin to ensure that the full dose is taken. If you have been given the syrup, use the dropper provided to measure out your dose of Phenytoin.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart disease, blood disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis or any bone development problems.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are being treated with Phenytoin.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction to Phenytoin or other epilepsy medicines.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You must use appropriate birth control methods while being treated with Phenytoin. Discuss this with your doctor.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Phenytoin is used to treat epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures). It may be used on its own or together with other epilepsy medicines.

Phenytoin is also used to relieve pain in a painful nerve condition that affects the face called trigeminal neuralgia.

What side effects could I experience?

Phenytoin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Phenytoin may also cause swelling and soreness of the gums, especially in children. Floss and brush your teeth regularly to prevent any infection of the gums.

Phenytoin may also cause headache, tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, problems sleeping, blurred vision, unusual eye movements and uncoordinated movements. Inform your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

Stop the medicine and alert your doctor immediately if you develop rashes, peeling of the skin, mouth ulcers, extensive or unusual bleeding or bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Alert your doctor if you develop a persistent fever or sore throat.

Inform your doctor if you experience fever, swollen glands or pain in the joints.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- antidepressants such as amitriptyline
- sleeping pills
- medicines for irregular heart beat such as amiodarone, quinidine
- cancer medicines
- other epilepsy medicines
- gastric medicines
- tolbutamide (a diabetes medicine)
- painkillers such as aspirin, phenylbutazone
- folic acid
- blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin
- supplements such as evening primrose oil and St John's wort
- asthma medicines such as theophylline
- birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
- antifungals or antibiotics eg ciprofloxacin, itraconazole
- disulfiram (a medicine used to treat alcoholism)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
