How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Modafinil exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.
You may take Modafinil with or without food. Swallow it whole, do not chew or crush it.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or if you ever had anxiety, depression, mood or psychiatric problems
Alert your doctor if you or your family ever had movement or speech tics (uncontrolled movements or sounds), or Tourette's syndrome.
Rarely, Modafinil may cause a serious life-threatening rash. If you develop rashes or other allergic reactions such as breathlessness, swelling of the eyes, face or lips after taking Modafinil, stop taking it and alert your doctor immediately.
It is important for you to have enough sleep and rest even while being treated with Modafinil. Modafinil cannot replace adequate sleep and rest.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have irregular heartbeat, chest pain (angina), heart valve problems or any other kind of heart disease or heart defects.
Alert your doctor if you have high blood pressure.
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant while being treated with Modafinil.
As you should not get pregnant while being treated with Modafinil, you will need to start on birth control before beginning treatment with Modafinil.
Modafinil may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss alternative birth control methods with your doctor. Continue with birth control for at least 2 months after stopping Modafinil.
Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Modafinil.
Modafinil is not meant for children younger than 16 years old.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid taking too much caffeine-containing drinks such as coffee, tea and certain soft drinks. Caffeine may prevent you from having a good night's sleep.
Why do I need this medicine?
Modafinil is used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness (narcolepsy). People with narcolepsy often fall asleep suddenly during normal waking hours. Modafinil can improve, but does not totally cure, this tendency to fall asleep unexpectedly.
Modafinil is also used to treat shift work sleep disorder, in which shift workers suffer sleeping problems due to their work routine.
Modafinil cannot replace adequate sleep and rest.
What side effects could I experience?
Common side effects of Modafinil include headache, problems sleeping, anxiety, nausea, dry mouth, stomach discomfort, appetite loss, heartburn, back pain and runny nose.
Modafinil may also make you drowsy, dizzy or cause blurred vision. If you feel dizzy or cannot see clearly, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Alert your doctor immediately if you experience chest pains, fast or irregular heartbeat or mood changes.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- high blood pressure medicines
- mood medicines such as clomipramine, sertraline, clozapine, tranylcypromine and related MAOI medicines
- sleeping pills or anxiety pills such as diazepam, alprazolam, triazolam, midazolam
- epilepsy medicines such as phenytoin, carbamazepine or phenobarbitone
- birth control pills
- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)
- ciclosporin (a medicine used in transplant and other illnesses)
- antibiotics and fungal medicines such as erythromycin, itraconazole or ketoconazole
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
