Ingredients

  • QUININE BISULFATE 300mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Quinine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Quinine at regular intervals as directed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better.

If you are taking Quinine for malaria or parasitic infections, you must complete the entire course unless otherwise directed. If you do not complete the course, the infection may not clear completely.

Take Quinine together with food or immediately after a meal.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid pregnancy while being treated with Quinine. Use proven birth control while you are being treated with Quinine. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Quinine.

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery or dental work, let your doctor or surgeon know that you are being treated with Quinine. Quinine may interact with some anaesthetics used during surgery.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Quinine if you previously had serious side effects such as blood disorders caused by Quinine.

Do not take Quinine if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, severe rash, swollen eyes) to similar medicines such as quinidine and mefloquine. Do not confuse Quinine with a similar sounding medicine called quinidine, which is used to treat heart problems.

Alert your doctor if you have a history of blackwater fever, heart, liver or kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, hearing problems such as tinnitus, nerve inflammation in the eye, or an inherited condition known as G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Quinine is used to treat malaria.

It may also be used to treat night-time leg cramps and a parasitic infection called babesiosis.

What side effects could I experience?

Quinine may cause stomach discomfort and nausea. Take Quinine with or immediately after food to minimise these side effects.

Less commonly, Quinine may cause a syndrome known as "cinchonism" which may require prompt medical attention. Alert your doctor immediately if the following symptoms are severe or refuse to go away:

- vomiting or diarrhoea
- rashes
- severe itch with skin flushing
- dizziness
- fever
- breathlessness
- ringing in ears
- problems with your eyesight
- headache that does not go away
- irregular heartbeat or chest discomfort

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Quinine with these medicines: antacids, erythromycin, troleandomycin, rifampicin and astemizole. Inform your doctor if you recently took or are currently taking any other malaria medicines, especially halofantrine or mefloquine.

Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:

- gastric medicine such as cimetidine
- heart medicines such as digoxin, amiodarone
- epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine, phenobarbitone, phenytoin
- a blood-thinning medicine called warfarin
- other medicines such as acetazolamide, sodium bicarbonate

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
