How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Vigabatrin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Vigabatrin must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop taking Vigabatrin unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if Vigabatrin is stopped suddenly.
You may take Vigabatrin with or without food. Take it with plenty of water.
Vigabatrin is available as sachets or tablets.
If you have been given the tablet, swallow it whole, do not chew or crush it.
If you have been given the sachet, dissolve it in 10mL of water, fruit juice, infant formula or milk before taking. Drink the solution immediately after you dissolve it.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease, depression, a history of behavioural, psychological or mood problems.
For as long as you are being treated with Vigabatrin, you will need to have your eyes checked regularly. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Vigabatrin.
Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Vigabatrin.
Alert your doctor if you have any eyesight problems or eye disorders.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Vigabatrin is used to treat epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures).
Vigabatrin is usually used together with other medicines to treat epilepsy.
What side effects could I experience?
Vigabatrin may cause dizziness and drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Vigabatrin may also cause tiredness, headache, tremors, depression, weight gain, irritability, restlessness, nervousness. Alert your doctor if any side effects are severe or if they do not go away.
Alert your doctor immediately if you notice any changes or abnormalities in your eyesight.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- other epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin or phenobarbitone
- sleeping pills
- evening primrose oil
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
