  • MESALAZINE 500mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Insert the Mesalazine suppository/ enema into your rectum exactly as instructed by your doctor.

Clear your bowels just before inserting the medicine. It is best to empty your bowels first, so that Mesalazine can work better on the diseased area.

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting the medicine.

Lie down on one side and lift one knee to your chest.

If you have been given a Mesalazine suppository:
1. Peel open the foil or plastic at the pre-cut dotted line.
2. Take out the suppository.
3. With the pointed end facing your buttocks, gently insert the suppository completely into your rectum.
4. Make sure that the suppository is completely in your rectum and is not sticking out. Otherwise, the medicine may leak out halfway and you may not get the full dose.
5. Keep the suppository in the rectum for at least 3 hours. This will give the best results.

Do not squeeze the suppository or hold it for too long in your hands. It will begin to melt if you do so.

If you have trouble inserting the suppository, you may dab a very small amount of lubricating gel on the suppository. Do not use too much lubricating gel.

If you have been given a Mesalazine enema:
1. Use it only at bedtime, just before you sleep.
2. Shake the bottle well before using.
3. Take out the protective cap from the nozzle.
4. Hold the bottle by the neck, otherwise the medicine may leak out when you tip the bottle.
5. Insert the nozzle gently into your rectum.
6. Tilt the bottle gently so that the nozzle is aimed towards your back.
7. When you are sure that the nozzle is safely in your rectum, squeeze the bottle slowly to release the medicine into your rectum.
8. When completed, withdraw the nozzle from your rectum.
9. Stay in the same position for at least 30 mins. Try not to move your lower body. This is important to allow the medicine to be distributed through your lower digestive tract.
10. Do not get up from the bed. Remain in a lying down position so that the medicine can be kept in your body for about 8 hours (or for as long as you are asleep).

Throw away the bottle.

Do not re-use the bottle.

Use Mesalazine suppository/ enema exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more or less often than instructed by your doctor.

You may need to use Mesalazine for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue to use it even when you feel better. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop using Mesalazine suppositories/ enemas unless advised by your doctor to do so.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Mesalazine suppositories and enemas can stain clothing, bedsheets, flooring and many other types of surfaces.

You may need to have regular blood tests to make sure that your blood counts, kidney and liver function are normal while you are being treated with Mesalazine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor immediately if you are allergic to medicines similar to Mesalazine, such as salicylates (e.g. aspirin) or sulfur-containing drugs (e.g. certain types of antibiotics or diabetes medicine).

Alert your doctor if you have any kidney or liver problems, blood disorders, urinary or intestinal (bowel) blockage or asthma.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Mesalazine.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Mesalazine.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Mesalazine is used to treat ulcerative proctitis. This disease causes inflammation in the lower part of the digestive tract, namely the lower part of the colon and the rectum.

Mesalazine helps to relieve the bleeding, mucous discharge and diarrhoea that is common in people who have ulcerative proctitis.

In order to treat the lower part of the digestive tract, your doctor has given you a Mesalazine suppository/ enema. A suppository/ enema delivers the medicine directly to the rectum and lower colon where it is needed most.

A suppository is a solid, bullet-shaped form of Mesalazine which will melt in your body to release the medicine.

An enema is a liquid form of Mesalazine.

What side effects could I experience?

Mesalazine suppositories or enemas may cause stomach wind, diarrhoea or headache.

If you feel that your proctitis problem has become worse after using Mesalazine, let your doctor know.

Other side effects are not common but may be more serious. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms:

- chest pain or difficulty breathing
- rash, headache, fever, bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps
- fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or bleeding

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Store below 25 °C. Do not freeze.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- heart medicines such as digoxin and talinolol
- blood-thinning medicine such as warfarin
