  • TIOTROPIUM 2.5mcg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Use Tiotropium exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Tiotropium is available as a capsule that is meant to be used with a device called a Handihaler. Place the capsule inside the Handihaler. DO NOT SWALLOW the capsule.

To take a dose using the Handihaler:
1. Take the capsule out from the blister pack just before you want to use it. Do not leave the capsule exposed to air for too long.
2. Place the capsule inside the centre chamber of the Handihaler. Close the mouthpiece firmly until you hear a click sound.
3. Hold the Handihaler with the mouthpiece facing upwards.
4. Press the green button fully ONCE only and release it. Do not press the green button more than once.
5. Breathe out fully.
6. Put the Handihaler to your mouth and close your lips tightly around the mouthpiece.
7. Breathe in slowly and deeply until your lungs are full. As you breathe in, you should hear or feel the capsule vibrate.
8. Hold your breath for as long as you can. At the same time, remove the Handihaler from your mouth.
9. Repeat steps 5-8. This will ensure you receive the full dose.

Tiotropium is also available as an inhaler.

To take a dose using the inhaler:
1. Hold the inhaler upright with the green cap closed.
2. Turn the base in the direction of the red arrows on the label until you hear a click sound.
3. Open the green cap fully.
4. Breathe out fully. Close your lips around the mouthpiece. Do not cover the air vents.
5. Point the inhaler towards the back of your throat.
6. Breathe in slowly and deeply and press the button. Continue to breathe in slowly. Do not breathe out.
7. Hold your breath for 10 seconds or as long as you can.

Make sure you know how to use the specific type of device you have been given. If you have problems or do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have glaucoma, prostate enlargement, bladder problems, myasthenia gravis or kidney disease.

Alert your doctor if your chest tightness or breathlessness seems worse, or if Tiotropium does not seem to give as much relief as before.

Do not allow the powder or solution to enter your eyes. If the powder or solution gets into your eyes, flush with clean water immediately. See a doctor quickly if there is pain, discomfort, blurred or abnormal vision after the solution or mist enters your eyes.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not use Tiotropium to relieve a sudden attack of breathlessness. Use your fast-acting bronchodilator prescribed by your doctor to relieve such acute attacks.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Tiotropium is used to treat asthma.

What side effects could I experience?

Tiotropium often causes dry mouth.

Less commonly, Tiotropium may also cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other uncommon side effects include headache, cough, changes in taste, constipation and problems urinating. If any of these side effects do not go away or get worse, let your doctor know.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- other asthma medicines
