How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Itraconazole exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Itraconazole at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better.

Fungal infections usually take a longer time to heal. You may need to take Itraconazole for a few weeks or months, depending on your doctor's advice. You must complete the entire course of Itraconazole. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Itraconazole may be available as capsules or as an oral liquid (also known as a syrup).

If you have been given capsules, take them immediately after a full meal.

If you have been given the oral liquid, take it on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before meals. Do not eat for at least 1 hour after taking the oral liquid. This will help improve the absorption of Itraconazole.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease.

Maintain proper hygiene as this is important in helping to control fungal infections.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, rashes, swollen eyes) to similar antifungal medications such as fluconazole, ketoconazole and voriconazole.

Alert your doctor if you have heart disease.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with Itraconazole. Use an effective birth control method while being treated with Itraconazole. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist. Avoid pregnancy for at least 2 months after you stop taking Itraconazole.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Itraconazole.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Avoid drinking too much grapefruit juice (more than 1 litre a day).

Why do I need this medicine?

Itraconazole is an antifungal medicine.

It is used to prevent or treat fungal infections of the lung, mouth, throat, nails or other organs.

What side effects could I experience?

Itraconazole may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Itraconazole may cause diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort and headache. These side effects are usually temporary. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Itraconazole may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while taking this medicine.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Protect from light. The oral solution can be stored at room temperature below 25°C. Do not freeze.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines. Do not take Itraconazole with these medicines:

- cisapride (a gastric medicine)
- terfenadine, astemizole (medicines for allergy)
- midazolam, triazolam, alprazolam, diazepam (sleeping pills)
- simvastatin, lovastatin (cholesterol medicines)
- pimozide, sertindole (mood medicines)
- quinidine, dofetilide (heart medicines)
- migraine medicines that contain ergotamine

Alert your doctor if you are also taking these medicines:
- diabetes medicines
- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)
- phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine (epilepsy medicines)
- cyclosporine, tacrolimus, sirolimus (medicines for organ transplant)
- rifampicin, rifabutin, isoniazid (medicines used to treat tuberculosis or TB)

- methylprednisolone, budesonide, dexamethasone (medicines for inflammation, allergy or asthma)
- alfentanil (a painkiller)

Do not take Itraconazole capsules together with antacids as they reduce the effectiveness of Itraconazole. If you must take antacids, take them between meals at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after you have taken Itraconazole capsules.

Some gastric medicines such as cimetidine, esomeprazole, famotidine, lansoprazole, omeprazole and ranitidine can reduce the absorption of Itraconazole capsules. If you must take any of these medications, take Itraconazole capsules with a cola soft drink.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
