Ingredients

  • ERYTHROMYCIN 250mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Erythromycin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Erythromycin at regular intervals as instructed. Take it at the same time each day. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Take Erythromycin on an empty stomach at least half an hour before (preferably 2 hours before) food, with plenty of water. This will improve the absorption of Erythromycin. However, if you experience stomach discomfort after taking Erythromycin, you may take it with food instead. Taking it with food will reduce the stomach discomfort.

Swallow the tablets or capsules whole; do not crush the tablets or the contents of the capsules.

If you have been given an oral suspension, shake it well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you suffer from heart, kidney or liver diseases; or any other medical conditions such as porphyria or myasthenia gravis.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are being treated with Erythromycin for gonorrhoea or syphilis, you should follow your doctor's advice on ways to prevent passing the disease to others. You should also avoid sexual contact until the doctor certifies that you are cleared of the infection.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (breathlessness, rashes, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as clarithromycin, azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotics.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Erythromycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the gut, ear, nose, throat, lungs or skin.

It is also used to treat sexually-transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea and syphilis.

Erythromycin can also be used to prevent infection when you undergo certain dental procedures.

Erythromycin belongs to a group of antibiotics called the macrolides.

What side effects could I experience?

You may have diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort and loss of appetite while being treated with Erythromycin. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Erythromycin with terfenadine, cisapride, pimozide, astemizole and colchicine -- alert your doctor immediately if you are taking any of these medicines.

Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- heart and blood pressure medicines, especially digoxin, verapamil, felodipine, quinidine, disopyramide
- migraine medicines such as ergotamine and eletriptan
- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)
