How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Topiramate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Topiramate must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop taking Topiramate unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if Topiramate is stopped suddenly.

Topiramate may be taken with or without food.

Topiramate is available as a tablet or capsule.

If you have been given the tablet, swallow it whole. Do not chew or break the tablet.

If you have been given the capsule, you may either swallow it whole or open it up. If you have problems swallowing, you may open the capsule and mix the contents with one teaspoonful of soft food such as applesauce or oatmeal. Swallow the mixture immediately without chewing. Drink some water to ensure that the full dose is taken.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, history of kidney stones, liver disease, depression, suicidal behaviour, glaucoma or other eye problems.

You may need to have blood tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

Unless your doctor has told you not to, drink plenty of water while being treated with Topiramate. This will help to reduce the chances of developing kidney stones.

Alert your doctor if you are taking a type of medicine known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, such as acetazolamide or dichlorphenamide.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Topiramate.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Topiramate is used to treat epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures). It may be used on its own or together with other epilepsy medicines.

Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches.

What side effects could I experience?

Topiramate may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Topiramate may also cause headache, tiredness, nausea, weight loss, loss of appetite, nervousness and problems concentrating. Inform your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience blurred vision, pain around the eyes, fever, reduced sweating or depression.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Topiramate together with a type of medicine known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, such as acetazolamide or dichlorphenamide.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- antidepressants such as amitriptyline
- mood medicines such as lithium
- sleeping pills such as diazepam
- other epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin or phenobarbitone
- heart medicine such as digoxin

Topiramate reduces the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss with your doctor regarding the use of additional non-hormonal birth control methods while being treated with Topiramate.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
