How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Benzhexol exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may need to take Benzhexol for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue taking Benzhexol even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Benzhexol suddenly as this could worsen your condition.
Take Benzhexol with food. Try to take Benzhexol at the same time each day.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have kidney, liver or heart disease, problems with blood pressure or a history of mental illness.
As Benzhexol may cause the pressure in your eyes to increase, you will need to have regular eye examination to monitor for any changes in your eyes. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant while being treated with Benzhexol.
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor if you suffer from an eye condition known as glaucoma, prostate enlargement, stomach or bladder blockage.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Benzhexol is used alone or together with other medicines to treat Parkinson's Disease. It is used to improve the medicinal effect of other Parkinson's Disease medicines such as levodopa.
Benzhexol cannot cure Parkinson's Disease but it can improve the quality of life for people who have the disease.
It may also be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
What side effects could I experience?
Benzhexol may cause drowsiness. If you feel drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Dry mouth is a common side effect of Benzhexol. If you experience severe dry mouth, take some sweets, mints or chewing gum to help reduce the discomfort.
Benzhexol may also cause vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, constipation, headache, tiredness, blurred vision, dry mouth, confusion, hallucinations and urinary difficulties. These side effects are common especially when you have just started taking Benzhexol. Let your doctor know if these side effects get worse or if they do not go away.
Benzhexol reduces the ability of your body to sweat. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or exercise which may cause your body to overheat as you are not able to sweat.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- mood medicines, antidepressants or sleeping pills
- heart medicines such as atenolol or digoxin
- medicines for cold or allergy known as antihistamines
- Alzheimer's medicines such as tacrine or donepezil
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
