How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Hydroxyzine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take Hydroxyzine with or without food. Take it with a full glass of water.
You may stop taking Hydroxyzine once you feel better, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: glaucoma, prostate enlargement or difficulty in passing urine, lung problems such as asthma or bronchitis, kidney problems or if you are receiving kidney dialysis.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking medicines to treat anxiety, depression, or help you sleep. These medicines are not suitable for use together with Hydroxyzine.
Check with the doctor if Hydroxyzine is to be given to an elderly. The elderly may be more sensitive to its side effects.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take Hydroxyzine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Why do I need this medicine?
Hydroxyzine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. It helps to relieve itch in allergic skin conditions, such as hives (raised red swellings) and eczema.
Hydroxyzine is also used to treat anxiety in adults and as a sedative, to help in sleep.
It may also be used to control motion sickness, to relieve nausea and vomiting.
What side effects could I experience?
Hydroxyzine may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Hydroxyzine may also cause dry mouth, weakness, headache, nervousness and nausea. These side effects are usually less common and not a cause for worry. Alert your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.
Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Hydroxyzine. Also inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsen while taking Hydroxyzine.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any medicines to help with sleep, anxiety or depression.
These may include:
- antidepressants such as amitriptyline, imipramine, fluoxetine, moclobemide, selegiline
- strong painkillers such as codeine, tramadol
- sleeping pills or anxiety medicine such as alprazolam, lorazepam, phenobarbitone
Also alert your doctor if you are taking medicines to help relax your muscles.
Do not take together with other medicines containing antihistamines, which include chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, promethazine, clemastine.
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
