How do I take/use this medicine?

Inhale Ribavirin exactly as directed by your doctor.

Ribavirin inhalation will be given by your doctor's nurse in the hospital. Ribavirin must be given on a regular schedule to make sure that there is a constant amount of medicine in the lungs. Continue to receive the inhalation even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of Ribavirin. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Ribavirin is placed into a machine which turns the medicine into a fine mist. Inhale this mist using the face mask, oxygen hood or oxygen tent which your nurse will provide for you. The mist helps to ensure that the medicine goes deep into your lungs.

Do not remove the face mask, oxygen hood or tent until the nurse has told you to do so.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease, mood disorders or psychiatric problems.

While you are being treated with Ribavirin, you will need to have blood tests done to monitor your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need these tests to be done.

Your doctor will also monitor your lung function while you are being treated with Ribavirin.

Visitors to the patient should avoid inhaling the Ribavirin mist. This is especially important for women of childbearing age and those who are pregnant.

When should I not use this medicine?

If your child or teenager is being treated with Ribavirin, and has a history of psychiatric disorders, alert the doctor.

Alert your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, breathing problems or other kinds of liver disease in addition to hepatitis.

Alert your doctor if you have blood disorders such as anaemia or thalassaemia.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You must avoid pregnancy while being treated with Ribavirin and for at least 6 months after you complete treatment. Both men and women being treated with Ribavirin must use at least 2 reliable types of birth control during treatment AND for at least 6 months after treatment ends.

If you are a man being treated with Ribavirin and your wife or partner is pregnant, you must not take Ribavirin. Alert your doctor quickly.

Pregnancy testing should be done every month during treatment with Ribavirin and for 6 months after treatment has stopped.

Do not breastfeed while being treated with Ribavirin.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.
