How do I take/use this medicine?
Take Linezolid exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take Linezolid at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.
You may take Linezolid with or without food.
If you have been given the tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water.
If you have been given the syrup, gently mix the syrup by turning the bottle over 3-5 times. Do not shake the bottle.
What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney or thyroid disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, blood disorders, a type of tumour known as carcinoid syndrome, adrenal gland tumour, psychiatric or any other medical problems.
Linezolid syrup contains aspartame and may not be suitable for you if you have a genetic disorder known as phenylketonuria.
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Linezolid.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, rashes, swollen eyes) to Linezolid.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid alcohol, especially red wine and tap/ draft beer.
Avoid cheese, air-dried meat (for example sausages and salami), pickles, soy sauce and other soy bean products. These may cause a sudden rise in your blood pressure if taken in large quantities with Linezolid.
Why do I need this medicine?
Linezolid is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissue. It is also used to treat lung infections such as pneumonia.
What side effects could I experience?
Linezolid may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Linezolid may cause diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort, change in taste and headache. These side effects are usually temporary. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.
Linezolid may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while taking this medicine.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
Once you have mixed the powder with water, the syrup can be stored at room temperature of up to 30Â°C. Throw away any unused portion after 21 days.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Can I take/use this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:
- mood medicines such as amitriptyline, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, isocarboxazid, moclobemide, nortriptyline, paroxetine, phenelzine, selegiline, sertraline, trazodone, venlafaxine
- cough or cold medicines that contain pseudoephedrine or phenylpropanolamine
- pain medicines such as tramadol, pethidine (meperidine)
- asthma medicines
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
