How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Aripiprazole exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may need to take Aripiprazole for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Do not be discouraged if you do not feel better soon after taking the medicine. Aripiprazole must be taken regularly for it to work properly.

Continue to take Aripiprazole even when you feel well. Do not stop taking Aripiprazole unless your doctor has decided that you can stop. If Aripiprazole is stopped suddenly, you may feel unwell or your condition may worsen. When your doctor decides that you do not need Aripiprazole anymore, he will usually reduce your dose slowly. Follow the doctor's instructions carefully.

You may take Aripiprazole with or without food. Take it with food if you find that it upsets your stomach. Try to take Aripiprazole at the same time everyday.

Aripiprazole may be available as a conventional tablet, an orodispersible tablet or an oral solution (syrup).

If you have been given the conventional tablet, swallow it with a glass of water.

If you have been given the orodispersible tablet, handle it gently. The orodispersible tablet is easily broken. Do not touch the tablet with wet hands. Remove it from the foil just before you take it. To remove the tablet from the foil, peel the foil backing away gently. Do not push the tablet through the foil as it may break. Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve. The tablet will break down quickly in your saliva. You may then swallow it with or without a glass of water. Do not cut, chew or crush the orodispersible tablet.

If you have been given the oral solution (syrup), shake the bottle gently before you open it. Use the dropper or measuring spoon given to accurately measure out your dose.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

- epilepsy (fits) or other brain disorders
- glaucoma (high pressure in the eye)
- previous stroke
- previous heart attack
- heart disease
- bone marrow disease
- blood disorders or a low blood cell count
- Parkinson's disease
- Alzheimer's disease or dementia
- problems with swallowing food or pills

If you have diabetes, you may need to monitor your blood sugar levels more often. This is because Aripiprazole may cause a rise in blood sugar levels. Ask your doctor about how often you need to check your blood sugar levels.

Aripiprazole may affect the ability of your body to adjust to temperature changes in the environment. Avoid exposure to very cold or very hot environments. Avoid strenuous exercise and activities like going to the sauna. Drink more water to prevent dehydration.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor if you suffer from phenylketonuria. Aripiprazole orodispersible tablets contain a substance called phenylalanine which is not suitable for people who have phenylketonuria.

Aripiprazole is not suitable for elderly people with psychosis that is related to dementia.

Aripiprazole may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children, teenagers and young adults. As depression and some psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with an increased risk of suicide, it is important for you or your family members to monitor your condition especially at the start of treatment and if your dosage is still being adjusted. If you experience new or sudden changes in mood, behaviour, thoughts or feelings or a worsening of your depression with suicidal thoughts or attempts, harm to self or harm to others, contact your doctor immediately.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Aripiprazole is used to treat schizophrenia. It helps to relieve symptoms common in schizophrenia, such as distorted thinking and emotional instability.

Aripiprazole is also used to treat other mood or psychiatric conditions such as paranoia, bipolar disorder (mania and hypomania), depression and irritability that are linked to autism.

What side effects could I experience?

Aripiprazole may make you drowsy or dizzy. It may also blur your vision. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. Dizziness may be worse when you get up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking Aripiprazole for the first time or if your dose is still being adjusted. This is normal and should disappear gradually as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position.

Some common side effects with Aripiprazole include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach discomfort, constipation, anxiety, agitation, restlessness, difficulty sleeping and headache. Inform your doctor if these side effects become severe or refuse to go away.

Inform your doctor if you gain weight while being treated with Aripiprazole.

Alert your doctor immediately if you have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting yourself.

Other side effects are less common but may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms:
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- chest pain
- any kind of rash or allergic reaction
- muscle spasms or muscle stiffness
- uncontrolled muscle movements of your body or face, such as sticking out of the tongue, smacking of the lips
- drooling
- shaky or trembling hands with poor coordination
- uncontrollable urge to move constantly or an inability to sit still
- epileptic fits
- excessive drowsiness, dizziness or if you faint
- mouth, tongue or throat ulcers
- fever or other signs of an infection

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

The orodispersible tablets must be kept in the original foil wrappers.

The oral solution (syrup) should be stored in the refrigerator, between 2-8 °C. Do not freeze. It must be thrown away 6 months after the seal has been broken.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- midodrine (used to treat low blood pressure)
- strong painkillers such as opioids (e.g. morphine, codeine)
- hay fever medicines such as antihistamines
- antidepressants or psychiatric medicines such as lithium, paroxetine, fluoxetine
