How do I take/use this medicine?

Enoxaparin may be injected by yourself or by your doctor.

If you are injecting Enoxaparin by yourself, your doctor will teach you how to do the injection.

Inject Enoxaparin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not inject more or less than instructed by your doctor. Follow your doctor's instructions exactly.

Enoxaparin is usually injected beneath the skin (subcutaneously).

Only these areas are suitable for injection:
- the lower abdominal area around the navel (belly button), OR
- the upper part of your thigh (choose a fleshy area)

If you are injecting at the lower abdomen, avoid the area 2 inches around the belly button.

Inject yourself at a different spot each time to prevent hardening of the skin and soreness at the injection site. Do not inject into any area that is scarred or bruised. Each new injection spot should be at least 1 inch away from the previous injection spot.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Wipe the area with an antiseptic swab. Using your thumb and forefinger, pinch a fold of skin in the area.

With a quick motion, insert the needle at a 45 or 90 degrees angle. Make sure the entire needle is inserted into the skin fold. Press the plunger. Do not release the skin fold until you have completed the injection. Remove the needle by pulling it straight out. Now, you can let go of the skin fold. Do not touch or rub the area after injection.

Do not inject into muscle.
Do not expel the air bubble from the syringe before injection.
Do not mix Enoxaparin with other injections.

Throw away the used syringe as instructed by your doctor. Do not dispose in the normal household waste.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions or any other illnesses:

- kidney disease
- liver disease
- thinning of your bones (osteoporosis)
- low platelet count or suffer from cancer
- recent brain, spine or eye surgery
- an artificial heart valve
- certain eye problems due to high blood pressure or diabetes
- weigh less than 45 kg (women) or 57 kg (men)

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Enoxaparin.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are being treated with Enoxaparin.

Keep all appointments with your doctor as he needs to closely monitor your response to Enoxaparin. Make sure you have your blood tests done as scheduled by your doctor.

Do not switch to another brand of Enoxaparin or to other medicines similar to Enoxaparin, such as dalteparin, nadroparin or tinzaparin unless your doctor has instructed you to do so.

Do not take part in activities in which you may fall or get injured such as contact sports. Report all falls and injuries to your doctor as there could be internal injuries which may not be obvious to you.

Take special care when shaving or handling sharp objects to avoid cutting yourself. Use a soft toothbrush when brushing your teeth to reduce the risk of gum bleeding.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to heparin, other medicines similar to Enoxaparin, or pork products.

Alert your doctor if you have or ever had any of these conditions:

- bleeding disorders or problems with blood clotting
- stomach ulcers
- stroke or bleeding in the brain
- high blood pressure
- bacterial infection in your heart
- history of low platelet count during treatment with heparin or other medicines similar to Enoxaparin

If you are going for a procedure where spinal or epidural anaesthesia is injected into your back, inform your doctor that you are using Enoxaparin.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Enoxaparin is a blood-thinning medicine that is given as an injection.

Enoxaparin reduces the formation of harmful blood clots in your body.

Enoxaparin is used to treat deep vein thrombosis (also known as DVT or blood clots in the leg veins) and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). You may be at risk of getting such blood clots after surgery or if you have been bed-bound most of the time.

Enoxaparin also prevents the formation of blood clots in the tubing during kidney dialysis.

Enoxaparin may also be used to prevent blood clots in certain types of heart disease.

What side effects could I experience?

Enoxaparin may cause pain, bruising and irritation at the site of injection.

Enoxaparin may cause you to bleed more easily. Alert your doctor if you get any unusual bruising (large bruises or several bruises especially if they appear by themselves or if they cover a large area), or bleeding that takes a long time to stop (for example, too much bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth). Alert your doctor if you notice blood in your urine, bowel movements or if you get a nose bleed.

If you develop rashes, fever and itch, inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Enoxaparin may cause other side effects. Alert your doctor if you have unusual problems while being treated with Enoxaparin .

How should I store this medicine?

Store Enoxaparin in a cool place. Do not store above 25°C. Do not refrigerate. Do not allow to freeze. Once frozen, Enoxaparin is no longer effective and should not be used.

Keep out of reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- other blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin, ticlopidine, clopidogrel, dipyridamole
- painkillers known as NSAIDs, such as aspirin, diclofenac, mefenamic acid, ibuprofen
- steroids for treating inflammation (swelling) such as prednisolone
- certain high blood pressure medicines
- digoxin

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
