How do I take/use this medicine?

Use Fluorouracil exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more or less than instructed. Do not apply over a wider area than instructed by your doctor.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Do not stop using Fluorouracil unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

Wash and dry the affected area. Apply a thin layer of Fluorouracil on the affected area. There is no need to apply a dressing or bandange, unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Avoid contact with your eyes. If the cream gets into your eyes, flush your eyes with clean water immediately.

Avoid contact with your lips, mouth and nostrils.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after use to avoid getting the cream onto other parts of your body.

Your skin condition may appear to worsen after you start treatment with Fluorouracil. This is normal; do not be alarmed. Continue to apply Fluorouracil as instructed by your doctor. Your skin will heal about 1-2 months after you stop treatment with Fluorouracil.

If your skin condition appears much worse than before or if it brings you discomfort, talk to your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not use Fluorouracil if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Fluorouracil, alert your doctor immediately. Fluorouracil may cause harm to your unborn child. Avoid pregnancy during and for 1 month after stopping treatment. Both men and women must use proven birth control methods while being treated with Fluorouracil. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Fluorouracil.

Alert your doctor if you have been told that your body does not have the enzyme DPD (dihydropyridimidine dehydrogenase).

Do not give Fluorouracil to children.

Why do I need this medicine?

Fluorouracil is used to treat certain types of skin cancers.

It is also used to treat some types of skin disorders that may develop into skin cancer.

Fluorouracil stops the growth of abnormal or cancerous skin cells.

What side effects could I experience?

Fluorouracil may also cause your skin to become more sensitive to the sun. Avoid direct exposure to the sun. Always protect your skin from the sun -- wear a hat and a long-sleeved shirt.

Fluorouracil may also cause some skin discomfort, such as redness, a tingling or burning sensation.

Inform your doctor if you experience any severe side effects.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

As Fluorouracil is a cancer medicine, always return any unused or expired solution to the clinic, hospital or pharmacy for disposal. Do not throw it away in the normal household waste.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
