How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Aprepitant exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

If you are taking Aprepitant to prevent nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, take it 1 hour before your chemotherapy treatment.

If you are taking Aprepitant to prevent nausea and vomiting after an operation, take it 3 hours before your operation.

Do not take Aprepitant to relieve existing nausea and vomiting. It is only used to prevent the onset of nausea and vomiting. Aprepitant may not be able to stop nausea and vomiting once it has begun.

You may take Aprepitant with or without food. However, you may take it with food to minimise any stomach discomfort that Aprepitant may cause. Swallow the capsule whole, do not chew or crush it.

Aprepitant is available in two different strengths -- 80 mg or 125 mg. Always make sure you know exactly which strength you are taking, and how many tablets to take. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Aprepitant is usually given for a short period of time only. Do not take it for a longer period of time than instructed by your doctor.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Aprepitant may reduce the efficacy of birth control pills. You should use additional or alternative birth control methods while you are being treated with Aprepitant and for 1 month after the last dose of Aprepitant.

If you are also taking a blood-thinning medicine called warfarin, you may need to monitor the clotting ability of your blood with a blood test called the International Normalised Ratio (INR) in the first 2 weeks following the start of Aprepitant treatment.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially these listed here. Aprepitant should not be taken with these medicines:

- astemizole
- cisapride
- pimozide
- terfenadine

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Aprepitant.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid grapefruit juice.

Why do I need this medicine?

Aprepitant is used to prevent nausea and vomiting due to cancer chemotherapy and surgery.

What side effects could I experience?

Aprepitant may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Aprepitant may also cause diarrhoea, constipation, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, tiredness, hiccups and headache. Inform your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away.

Less commonly, Aprepitant may cause other side effects which may be more serious. Alert your doctor if you experience severe stomach pain, rashes or changes in your heart rate.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Aprepitant with astemizole, cisapride, pimozide or terfenadine.

In addition, alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:

- antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole, itraconazole
- antibiotics such as clarithromycin, troleandomycin
- TB medicine such as rifampicin
- epilepsy medicine such as carbamazepine, phenytoin
