How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Toremifene exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Do not stop taking Toremifene unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

You may take Toremifene with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease, any blood clotting disorders or unusual vaginal bleeding.

For as long as you are being treated with Toremifene, you will need to have regular blood tests to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have the blood tests.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Toremifene if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Toremifene, alert your doctor immediately. Toremifene may cause harm to your unborn child. Both men and women must use proven birth control methods while being treated with Toremifene. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Toremifene.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Toremifene is used to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is given to women who no longer have menstrual periods.

It may also be used to manage other types of cancers, such as womb cancer, as decided by your doctor.

Toremifene blocks the activity of the female hormone called oestrogen. In doing so, Toremifene slows down the growth of cancers that depend on oestrogen for growth.

What side effects could I experience?

Alert your doctor if you notice any changes in your menstrual period, changes in vaginal discharge, pain in the pelvis or lower abdomen.

Toremifene may cause dizziness, blurred vision or problems seeing at night. If you are affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other common side effects of Toremifene include hot flushes, sweating, nausea and loss of appetite. You may also develop more bone pain and hot flushes soon after you start treatment. This is expected and should get better as your body gets used to the medicine. However, alert your doctor if any side effects are severe or do not go away.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

As Toremifene is a cancer medicine, always return any unused or expired capsules to the clinic, hospital or pharmacy for disposal. Do not throw it away in the household waste.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, such as these listed here:

- blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin
- epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin and phenobarbital
