How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Hydroxyurea exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Do not stop taking Hydroxyurea unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

Take Hydroxyurea on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.

If you cannot swallow the capsule, you may open the capsule and empty the contents of the capsule into a glass of water. Drink it immediately. Some of the powder may not dissolve and may float on the surface of the water. Do not breathe in the powder or let it come into contact with your eyes or skin.

If you accidentally spill the powder, wipe it up immediately with a damp disposable towel. Place the towel in a plastic bag and throw it away immediately. Do not reuse the towel. You must also throw the empty capsule away immediately after you have taken the medicine. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the capsules.

If you are taking care of a loved one with cancer, make sure that you wear disposable gloves when handling Hydroxyurea capsules. Do not touch the capsules with your bare hands. Do not reuse the gloves. Place the used gloves in a plastic bag and throw it away immediately. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the capsules.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.

For as long as you are being treated with Hydroxyurea, you will need to have regular blood tests to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have the blood tests.

Do not have any vaccinations without first asking your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have any blood disorders.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Hydroxyurea if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Hydroxyurea, alert your doctor immediately. Hydroxyurea may cause harm to your unborn child. Both men and women must use proven birth control methods while being treated with Hydroxyurea. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Hydroxyurea.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Hydroxyurea is used to treat cancer.

It is used to treat skin cancer, cancer of the ovaries and cancer of the white blood cells (also known as leukaemia).

Hydroxyurea may also be used together with radiotherapy (also known as radiation treatment) for specific types of skin cancers.

Hydroxyurea interferes with the growth of cancer cells.

What side effects could I experience?

Hydroxyurea will cause the level of your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to drop.

Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients around your body. When the level of red blood cells fall, you may often feel tired and weak.

White blood cells help your body to fight infections. When the level of your white blood cells drops, it may put you at higher risk for infections, such as coughs, colds and flu, which may lead to more serious infections. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick. Alert your doctor if you have a fever, or a cough or flu that does not go away.

Platelets help your blood to clot when there is a cut in the skin. When the level of your platelets drops, you may be at risk of bleeding more than usual. Do not participate in activities in which you may fall or get injured, such as contact sports. Alert your doctor if you get any unusual bruising (large bruises or several bruises) or bleeding that takes a long time to stop (for example, too much bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth).

You may also have diarrhoea, rashes, headaches, nausea and mouth ulcers. You may also lose your appetite. If these symptoms become severe, contact your doctor.

Hydroxyurea may also cause dizziness and tiredness. If you are affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

As Hydroxyurea is a cancer medicine, always return any unused or expired capsules to the clinic, hospital or pharmacy for disposal. Do not throw it away in the household waste.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, for example:

- HIV (AIDS) medicines such as didanosine or stavudine
- gout medicines such as probenecid
- medicines used to treat immune system problems, such as interferon

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
